Kinder Morgan needs to spill more info: Ross The Times January 31, 2012 Kinder Morgan must provide more information to the city and to the community when oil spills happen, like the one that occurred at its Sumas Mountain terminal last week, said an Abbotsford city councillor. "My concern is not only what happened up there (on Tuesday), but the communications following the spill," Coun. Patricia Ross said Monday. She said the oil transport company's communication to the city and to the public was too slow and too vague. "It's not good enough to say everything is just fine in an e-mail. It's not good enough to say air emissions are safe. I want to know what the air emissions were and how long they were in the area. I think the public deserves to know." Edmonton creek oil spill kept secret October 2, 2010 EDMONTON - While Hollywood heavyweight James Cameron was being squired around Alberta to learn about the oilsands, Randy Neufeldt was watching a clean-up crew discreetly mop up a crude-oil spill in an Edmonton creek. The leak was at Gibson's holding facility at 10534 17 St. Maps show the creek flowing into the North Saskatchewan River across from Rundle Park. Company officials say the leak was detected on Sept. 23. Neufeldt said he saw the clean-up crews on his commute home around 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On the second day, he said, the area reeked of gas. cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Environment/2010/10/02/15556816.html

Bad weather heads for stricken ship Updated 2:53 PM Sunday Oct 9, 2011
A severe weather watch has been issued for the area where a container ship has been leaking oil off the coast of Tauranga.
The MV Rena has been stuck on the Astrolabe Reef since Wednesday.
It has already spewed 20 tonnes of fuel oil into the sea, sparking a massive operation to try to offload the 2000 tonnes it's still carrying. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10757721 Here Comes The Rain Again. 21 August 2009. The Montara oil spill was an oil and gas leak and subsequent slick that took place in the Montara oil field in the Timor Sea, off the northern coast of Western Australia. It is considered one of Australia's worst oil disasters.[1] The slick was released following a blowout from the Montara wellhead platform on 21 August 2009, and continued leaking until 3 November 2009 (in total 74 days), when the leak was stopped by pumping mud into the well and the wellbore cemented thus "capping" the blowout. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montara_oil_spillPTTEP confirms oil spill cause, January 14, 2010. Brazilian police probe Chevron oil spill www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGgvGwoBWkMleaking exploratory well, owned by Chevron and run by Transocean Chevron to Face Steep Fines for Brazilian Oil Spill November 22, 2011 RIO DE JANEIRO (Dow Jones)–U.S. oil major Chevron Corp. (CVX) faces heavy fines in Brazil after the company accepted responsibility for an oil spill at an offshore field, including the possible loss of a key license that allows Chevron to operate in deep waters that potentially hold billions of barrels of crude, government officials told reporters late Monday. Brazil’s leading environmental regulator, the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources, or Ibama, imposed late Monday a 50 million Brazilian reais ($28 million) fine for environmental damages after a drilling incident caused between 2,400 barrels and 3,000 barrels of oil to leak into the Atlantic Ocean near Chevron’s Frade field, according to company and government estimates. But the penalties could rise dramatically as Chevron confronts a political backlash over the spill, including charges that the company withheld information from regulators. Rio de Janeiro state officials could levy fines of about BRL100 million, while Brazil’s National Petroleum Agency, or ANP, announced two notices of infraction for Chevron that could each carry fines of BRL50 million. gcaptain.com/chevron-face-steep-fines-brazilian?34125Brazil Oil Spill: Chevron Executives Barred From Leaving Country First Posted: 03/17/2012 9:05 pm Updated: 03/18/2012 2:14 pm * Chevron halts output after navy spots oil stains * Regulator ANP allows Chevron to stop production * Spill in November led to $11.1 billion civil suit (Recasts to add court decision, production halt) By Guillermo Parra-Bernal and Jeb Blount SAO PAULO/RIO DE JANEIRO, March 17 (Reuters) - A Brazilian court on Saturday barred 17 executives from Chevron and Transocean from leaving Brazil, pending criminal charges related to a high-profile oil spill last November. www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/18/brazil-oil-spill-chevron_n_1355923.html

Total's North Sea Gas Leak Sending Drillers Lower Posted 03/27/2012 02:42 PM ET Despite the gas plume and a visible sheen on the water, Total on Tuesday said preliminary assessments indicated "no significant impact to the environment." But drilling a relief well to ease the pressure and stop the flow could take six months, Total said. Other faster alternatives could be riskier. news.investors.com/article/605731/201203271442/total-natural-gas-leak-sends-shares-lower.htm___________________________ North Sea Gas Leak/First Acid Rain Warning/UK/Amsterdam North Sea Natural Gas Disaster Update. Montara Oil Spill: "A failure of sensible oilfield practice" December 8, 2010 - 11:25am While BP's deepwater spill in the Gulf of Mexico was worldwide news for months, the worst incident of its kind in Australia in August 2009 also leaked for 74 days before the well could be brought under control. Yet in Australia media interest was muted after the first few days and most people even here would have forgotten that it ever happened. Nobody seems to care if you don't have a household name like BP? An inquiry was completed in August 2010, but the report has only now been released along with the Government's response. This post provides a summary of the incident and findings, primarily based on the Inquiry's Report. The Montara Development Project is owned and operated by PTTEPAA, a subsidiary of the Thai company PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP). The Development is located in a remote area of the Timor Sea, approximately 250km north‐west of the Western Australian coast, and almost 700km from Darwin. The Montara oil spill occured after a blowout and fire on the Montara wellhead platform. The blowout occurred on the H1 well on August 21, 2009 while the West Atlas jackup drilling rig was operating over another well at the time. Sixty-nine workers were safely evacuated from the drilling rig. The leak continued for 74 days, until an intervention well was successful on its fifth attempt on 3rd November and mud was pumped in to 'kill' the well. The Thai operator estimated that the flow of oil may have been between 1000-1500 barrels per day in the early stages and declined to 400 barrels per day later. In total it is estimated that 30,000 barrels were spilled (plus presumably a good deal of gas and/or condensate). The total surface area over which oil or sheen was observed at one time or another was around 90,000 square kilometres. more: www.theoildrum.com/node/7193

Kinder Morgan pleads guilty on Burnaby oil spill as tanker debate shifts south 3 Oct 2011. The timing could not be worse for Kinder Morgan and Trans Mountain Pipelines, who pleaded guilty today in a Vancouver court room to charges arising from a massive 2007 oil spill that soaked a Burnaby neighbourhood and polluted Burrard Inlet. ** UBCM delegates voted Friday to deman a full review of that proposal, a demand so far rejected by the National Energy Board. ** www.geoffmeggs.ca/2011/10/03/kinder-morgan-pleads-guilty-on-burnaby-oil-spill-as-tanker-debate-shifts-south/Crude oil shot from a geyser 20 to 40 feet in the air for nearly 30 minutes on Inlet Drive - covering homes, trees, and wildlife, and contaminating 830,000 kilograms of soil. www.burnabynow.com/Kinder+Morgan+ordered+Burnaby+spill/5692949/story.htmlKinder Morgan extends open season - March 27, 2012 The company announced Tuesday, March 27, that the "open season" period, which already closed on Feb. 16, will run for another two weeks, starting on March 27. The open season is when shippers who use the pipeline agree to long-term binding contracts should the pipeline expand www.burnabynow.com/news/Kinder+Morgan+extends+open+season/6367310/story.html________________________ April 26, 2012, 12:01 a.m. EDT Vancouver wrestles with green, oil tension Commentary: Coastal city must balance green ambitions with gateway obligations VANCOUVER, B.C. (MarketWatch) — If Vancouver is to become “the world’s greenest city,” can it also be a booming oil port? Just the thought horrifies this city’s enviro-mayor, who’s vowing to “fiercely oppose” Kinder Morgan’s recently announced plans to significantly increase capacity of its 60-year-old Trans Mountain pipeline from Alberta that ends in the Vancouver suburb of Burnaby. Becoming a major oil port “is totally at odds with our city brand and our identity and ethic,” just- re-elected Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson complained after Kinder’s expansion of Trans Mountain was announced earlier this month. more: www.marketwatch.com/story/vancouver-wrestles-with-green-oil-tension-2012-04-26

Crews work to clean up oil spill at remote Alberta site Fri. May. 25 2012 2:29 PM ET Calgary-based Pace Oil and Gas announced the spill on Thursday on its website, after it was spotted during a flyover on May 19. Because the area is muskeg, which is similar to a bog or swamp, Pace had to build a road using logs in order to bring in the equipment needed to perform the cleanup, Woods said. www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/TopStories/20120525/pace-oil-spill-alberta-muskeg-120525/

Province rushes to contain oil spill on Red Deer River Plains Midstream estimates up to 3,000 barrels of crude leaked into waterway June 8, 2012 2:49 PM CALGARY — Containment booms have been set up at a key reservoir in west-central Alberta to sop up crude oil flowing in the swollen Red Deer River from a pipeline leak north of Sundre. Water intake valves along the 56-kilometre spill path have been shut in and residents downstream of the town to Gleniffer Lake were notified of the incident, said Alberta Environment Friday. Residents along the banks of the river have already reported the stench of sour oil and sightings of dead wildlife following a 1,000- to 3,000-barrel spill into a tributary north of Sundre Thursday evening. Pipeline operator Plains Midstream Canada said it shut down its Rangeland pipeline operations immediately following notification of the leak at Jackson Creek. The company said the strong odour resulting from the oil did not pose a health of safety risk to the public. more: www.vancouversun.com/business/energy%20resources/Province+rushes+contain+spill+Deer+River/6752399/story.html

Elk Point pipeline spill releases 230,000 litres of heavy crude: Enbridge June 20, 2012 EDMONTON - Cleanup is underway after an oil spill Monday along Enbridge’s Athabasca pipeline, southeast of Elk Point, the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board says. The company estimates about 230,000 litres of heavy crude oil spilled from a pumping station along the surface pipeline about 24 kilometres southeast of Elk Point, the board said Tuesday. www.vancouversun.com/business/energy+resources/Point+pipeline+spill+releases+litres+heavy/6810820/story.html_________________________________ Greenpeace Ad Highlighting Oil Spills Rejected By Billboard Company Owned By Car Dealer June 19, 2012 New Yorker writer A.J Liebling said: "Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one". It turns out that in Canada, the same thing applies to billboards. Most of them in Canada are owned by Jim Pattison, who started his career selling cars and is now the largest car retailer in British Columbia. (He is also the third richest man in Canada and owns the Guinness Book of Records.) So perhaps it is no surprise that after Greenpeace rented a billboard in Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, it was rejected by the Pattison Group. Greenpeace complains: “It’s absolutely unbelievable that the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers can put up billboards across the country comparing toxic tar sands to yogurt, but a Greenpeace billboard comparing the benefits of solar energy to the risk of pipeline spills is rejected. It’s mind blowing,” said Mike Hudema, climate and energy campaigner with Greenpeace Canada. more: www.treehugger.com/energy-policy/greenpeace-ad-highlighting-oil-spills-rejected-billboard-company-owned-car-dealer.html
