Enbridge shuts third line in U.S. due to leak September 14, 2010 Enbridge Inc. on Monday said it had substantially cleaned up an oil spill in Illinois even as a third export line to the U.S. was shut down after a leak near Buffalo, N.Y. Enbridge Energy Partners, the Houston-based affiliate that operates Enbridge's U.S. pipeline network, reported that 6,100 barrels escaped from its Line 6A into an industrial park near Romeoville, Ill., on Thursday, and that 6,050 barrels had been sucked up by vacuum trucks over the weekend. www.calgaryherald.com/business/Enbridge+shuts+third+line+leak/3520079/story.html***** Enbridge, U.S. Regulators, Lack a `Culture of Safety,' Rep. Oberstar Says Sep 15, 2010 3:58 PM MT Today’s hearing was called to examine the cause and impacts of a July 26 oil spill from Enbridge’s Line 6B near Marshall, Michigan. It was held against the backdrop of another Enbridge spill from its 6A line southwest of Chicago and the fatal explosion of PG&E Corp. natural gas line in San Bruno, California, that burned a 15-acre residential area. www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-09-15/enbridge-u-s-regulators-lack-a-culture-of-safety-rep-oberstar-says.html

Enbridge controlled oil burn This is not Enbridge's first major spill, between 1999 and 2008 Enbridge recorded 610 spills that released 132,000 barrels of hydrocarbons into farms, wetlands and waterways on the continent. According to the Polaris Institute, this volume of crude “amounts to approximately half of the oil that spilled from the oil tanker the Exxon Valdez after it struck a rock in Prince William Sound, Alaska in 1988.” Source www.wikipedia.org. Enbridge oil spill record and other controversiesJanuary 2001 - Enbridge’s Energy Transportation North Pipeline leaked 3,800 cubic meters (23,900 barrels) of crude oil into a slough near Hardisty, Alberta. Nearly 74,000 tons of contaminated soil were collected and thermally treated at the terminal.... www.keyframe5.com/enbridge-what-happened-when-big-corporation-cut-corners/

Oil Spill in Southeastern North Dakota May 10, 2011 Oil was shooting straight in the air according to witnesses. TransCanada, which runs the Keystone Oil pipeline through eastern North Dakota is cleaning up an oil spill at a pumping station near Cogswell, in Sargent County. Bob Banderet tells KFGO's Don Haney he reported the leak about 6am Saturday. He lives 1 1/2 miles away and saw oil gushing 60 feet into the air. He called the pipeline's emergency number and told them it was like something out of a movie. Banderet says at first they didn't believe him. He says the pipeline was shut about 20 minutes after he reported the leak. It’s unknown how much oil was spilled. The pipeline company was not available for comment. The cause is under investigation. www.kfgo.com/fargo-moorhead-news.php?ID=0000004092

Enbridge confirms pipeline leak in N.W.T. Norman Wells system feeds Rainbow pipeline May 10, 2011 9:02 PM CALGARY — A small oil spill in the Northwest Territories on a line that feeds the Rainbow pipeline comes the week after that line faced a major leak which has resulted in fuel shortages and pipeline outages. The new leak was discovered Monday afternoon after pipeline operator Enbridge Inc. received a complaint about a stench of oil about 35 kilometres south of the hamlet of Wrigley, N.W.T. www.edmontonjournal.com/business/Enbridge+confirms+pipeline+leak/4760434/story.html

Untimely pipeline spills TransCanada, Enbridge buffeted by accidents; Alberta frets over landlocked bitumen Week of June 19, 2011 Vol. 16, No. 25 What started out as a reported four-barrel spill on an Enbridge pipeline in the Northwest Territories, is now estimated to be in the range of 700 to 1,500 barrels. Around the same time, there was a leak of about 10 barrels from a Kansas pump station on TransCanada’s existing Keystone pipeline, forcing a week-long shutdown of the 591,000-barrel-per-day system — the 11th break, averaging less than 10 barrels, along the 1,260-mile U.S. portion of the line in its first year of operation. Not much in the grand scheme of things, but unfortunate timing for the two Canadian pipeline companies as they try to sway regulators, governments and citizens to support their massive new undertakings — TransCanada’s 500,000 bpd Keystone XL addition and Enbridge’s 525,000 bpd Northern Gateway project. www.petroleumnews.com/pntruncate/670124073.shtml As opposed to say timely pipeline spills, like when is a great time to have oil spills.

Oil Spill In Montana River Forces Evacuation July 2, 2011 An ExxonMobil pipeline that runs under the Yellowstone River near Billings in south-central Montana ruptured and dumped an unknown amount of oil into the waterway, prompting temporary evacuations along the river Saturday morning. Company spokeswoman Pam Malek said the pipe leaked for about a half-hour, though it's not clear how much oil leaked. The cause of the rupture in the pipe carrying crude oil from Belfry, Mont., to the company's refinery in Billings wasn't known. www.npr.org/2011/07/02/137579350/oil-spill-in-montana-river-forces-evacuation

Teams gauge Exxon oil spill damage to Mont. river AP – 1 hr 11 mins ago LAUREL, Mont. (AP) — Teams of federal and state workers fanned out Sunday along Montana's Yellowstone River to gauge the environmental damage from a ruptured ExxonMobil pipeline that spewed tens of thousands of gallons of crude into the famous waterway. news.yahoo.com/teams-gauge-exxon-oil-spill-damage-mont-river-152649789.html* A 25-mile long slick of oil had reached as far west as Hysham Saturday night. An estimated 1,000 barrels, or 42,000 gallons, spilled Saturday before the flow of oil from the damaged pipeline was stopped.
* The river has no dams on its way to its confluence with the Missouri River just across the Montana border in North Dakota. It was unclear how far the plume might travel.
* A 600-foot-long black smear of oil coated Jim Swanson's riverfront property just downstream from where the pipe broke.
* "The timing couldn't be worse," said Steve Knecht, chief of operations for Montana Disaster and Emergency Services, who added that the plume was measured at 25 miles near Pompeys Pillar National Monument. "With the Yellowstone running at flood stage and all the debris, it makes it dang tough to get out there to do anything."
* The smell of oil permeated the air for miles downstream and through the city of Billings.
* "Nobody's been able to lay their eyes on the pipe," Peters said. "Right now, the Yellowstone River is at flood stage. The bank isn't stable enough for anybody to get close."
* Peters and Malek said speculation involves high water that might have gouged out the river bed and exposed the pipe, which was possibly hit by debris. "I haven't seen it this high for at least 15 years," Peters said.
Jeb Montgomery of ExxonMobil said the pipe was buried six feet below the riverbed.
* The state has received record rainfall in the last month and also has a huge snowpack in the mountains that is melting, which has resulted in widespread flooding in recent weeks.
* He said ExxonMobil and Cenex Harvest Refinery did so [turned off the flow of oil], and that Conoco Phillips said its pipe was already shut down.
* Laurel, which has about 6,500 residents, is known for a huge Fourth of July fireworks display put on by the fire department. Peters said the town can swell to as many as 50,000 people for the event.

Alberta OK's coal power plant, angering eco groups Last Updated: Aug 11, 2011 4:37 PM MT It's unclear whether emissions issues at the current plant will affect that process. The Alberta Utilities Commission decision notes that levels of air pollutants in the vicinity of the plant have "occasionally exceeded" provincial standards, and that the new generating station would do so as well. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/story/2011/08/11/alberta-maxim-power-coal-plant-approved.html_______________________________ Coal power plant races against regulation Published Thursday, Jul. 07, 2011 7:00PM EDT Last updated Sunday, Aug. 07, 2011 6:38PM EDT Maxim Power Corp. (MXG-T2.20-0.15-6.38%) is racing to beat proposed federal emission regulations that could derail its plan to build a 500-megawatt coal-fired power plant in the mountains of western Alberta. The Calgary-based, TSX-listed company won approval to build the $1.7-billion plant from the Alberta Utilities Commission last week, after arguing it needed an immediate decision to meet an ambitious time line that would allow it to avoid the tough new federal regime. www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/industry-news/energy-and-resources/coal-power-plant-races-against-regulation/article2090435/
