All our businesses in town rely on the lake for their business all summer. Class-action lawsuit seeks $75M over oil spill into Red Deer River Posted: 06/22/2012 10:12 AM * The couple was hoping to get between $119,000 and $169,000 before the leak happened. * The claim alleges negligence on the part of Plains Midstream Canada for allowing the leak to happen. It says the company should have known pipelines in the area were vulnerable during periods of heavy rain. (2008) * But fishing guides and residents have already said they fear the leak could do long-term damage www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-life/life/greenpage/class-action-lawsuit-seeks-75m-over-oil-spill-into-red-deer-river-160011325.html

Barge sinks, tugboat overturns in Lake Huron, spilling diesel fuel The Associated Press Last Updated Friday, Jul. 20, 2012 11:07AM EDT LAKEPORT, Mich. -- Crews have plugged all fuel valves and vents on a barge that sank in stormy Lake Huron, preventing more fuel from spilling, and people nearby are being warned to stay indoors as much as possible to avoid fumes, the Coast Guard said Friday. A 110-foot dredging barge sank early Thursday, and the tug pushing it overturned, spilling an unknown amount of diesel fuel. The Coast Guard said crews suspended work late Thursday until daylight Friday, when they returned... The Coast Guard said fuel from the barge reached the Michigan shoreline near Lakeport State Beach, about 65 miles northeast of Detroit. www.ctvnews.ca/canada/barge-sinks-tugboat-overturns-in-lake-huron-spilling-diesel-fuel-1.886277

Kalamazoo River Tar Sands Oil Spill in Kalamazoo River in Michigan the Most Expensive Onshore Oil Spill in History - July 11, 2012 Officials claim that this may be the worst oil spill ever in the midwest, and the single most expensive onshore spill in history because of one key difference – the source and type of oil. We are sadly used to cleaning up crude oil – the booms, skimming the oil from the surface, etc – but the spill in Michigan was tar sands oil which is enormously and disastrously different than crude oil. Primarily, tar sands oil sinks and the oil companies have no clue nor proper equipment to clean up this type of oil. About all that can be done is to literally shake the river bed, to agitate the river bed with big machines in order to try to make the oil temporarily rise to the top where they could get at it. motleynews.net/2012/07/11/tar-sands-oil-spill-in-kalamazoo-river-in-michigan-the-most-expensive-onshore-oil-spill-in-history/Report: Enbridge Energy's oil spills show it can't be trustedJuly 24, 2012 | Detroit Free Press Staff Writer A National Wildlife Federation report released Monday criticizes Enbridge Energy's plans to expand its pipeline capacity in Michigan and elsewhere in North America in light of the company's more than 800 oil spills between 1999 and 2010... Sadly, but somehow I am not surprised with this finding, but the NTSB, National Transportation Safety Board, has released findings of their investigation into what happened in that spill. They found that the oil company responsible for that pipeline knew about cracks in that particular stretch of pipeline a full five years before the pipe ruptured. A FULL FIVE YEARS! Furthermore, it took them a good 17 hours before they even realized that one of their own pipes had burst, and in that time, they pumped more than 600,000 gallons of oil through the ruptured pipeline and right into the river. www.freep.com/article/20120724/NEWS05/207240338/Report-Enbridge-Energy-s-oil-spills-show-it-can-t-be-trusted

U.S. pipeline agency probes Enbridge oil spill in Wisconsin WASHINGTON | Sat Jul 28, 2012 11:30am EDT (Reuters) - The U.S. pipeline safety agency launched an investigation on Saturday into an oil spill in Wisconsin on Enbridge Inc's network that forced the partial shutdown of a main artery carrying light sweet Canadian crude to Chicago-area refineries. Enbridge's 318,000 barrel per day Line 14 pipeline, part of the Lakehead system, was shut after an estimated 1,200 barrels of oil were leaked. This happened almost two years to the day after another major spill in a different section of the line, in Michigan. www.reuters.com/article/2012/07/28/us-enbridgeenergy-crudeoil-idUSBRE86R01O20120728

Montara Oil Spill: "A failure of sensible oilfield practice" -- Yet in Australia media interest was muted after the first few days and most people even here would have forgotten that it ever happened. -- An inquiry was completed in August 2010, but the report has only now been released along with the Government's response. This post provides a summary of the incident and findings, primarily based on the Inquiry's Report. -- more: www.theoildrum.com/node/7193Forgotten tragedy:Timor Sea oil spill George Roberts reported this story on Saturday, July 28, 2012 08:25:00 ELIZABETH JACKSON: It's been called the forgotten tragedy; fishing communities in Indonesia's West Timor region say their livelihoods have been contaminated by one of Australia's biggest oil spills, the Montara disaster in the Timor Sea. The Thai-based company involved, PTTEP (PTT Exploration and Production Public Company), and the Australian Government doesn't believe the slick or the toxic chemicals used to disperse it have adversely affected anything. But environmentalists say the response is not sufficient and a new report has quantified the damage at billions of dollars. ---- DR MUKHTASOR: Right now we are observing that the number of fishery activity is going down very much. For example, seaweed production decreasing about 70 per cent; that's a very, very strong indication of the problem. ---- GEORGE ROBERTS: Local representative, Ferdi Tanoni, says the region supported about 8,000 fishermen, now that's dropped to 1,000. ---- FERDI TANONI: Lobster this year - no more export from Timor. ROBERT SPIES: The application disperses when done correctly, limits the lifetime of the oil but at the same time makes it more toxic in the short term. GEORGE ROBERTS: Dr Spies was the chief scientific advisor on the Exxon Valdez oil spill and reported to the US president, Barack Obama, over the Gulf of Mexico disaster. He says the assessment of Montara's impact on Indonesia hasn't been sufficient. ROBERT SPIES: There was a big study in Australian waters and they didn't find much. so in terms of impacts, here we have apparent impacts, so it's an imbalance that there's not that appropriate studies being carried out here. GEORGE ROBERTS: Aside from any questions of damage, Ferdi Tanoni thinks there's another reason for Australia to be concerned. He says local fishermen are turning to people smuggling to make ends meet. www.abc.net.au/am/content/2012/s3555577.htm

Leaking pipeline soaks field - August 23, 2012, Red Deer Advocate Another environmental cleanup is underway in Central Alberta after nearly 2,000 barrels of mostly contaminated water from a leaking pipeline soaked a canola field east of Red Deer. The Energy Resources Conservation Board revealed on Wednesday that it’s investigating the latest pipeline break after about 1,900 barrels (or 300,000 litres) were released from a Penn West Exploration line on Tuesday onto private farmland about 10 km east of Red Deer, near Joffre. www.ernstversusencana.ca/leaking-pipeline-soaks-field

Eni Says Oil Spill Near Nigerian Asset Contained - Tuesday, September 18, 2012 LONDON - Italian oil major Eni SpA said Tuesday that an oil spill that occurred last week near its Obama flowstation in Nigeria has been contained. The oil spill occurred 10km from Obama, an Eni spokesman said in an emailed statement, adding that the cause and size of the spill was not yet known. Oil spills are a common occurrence in Nigeria, with pipelines frequently damaged by oil thieves. However, Nigerian lawmakers seem to be taking a tougher stance towards environmental damage caused by major oil companies operating in the country. Royal Dutch Shell PLC's Nigerian unit faces a massive fine of up to $5 billion after an offshore rig in December leaked 40,000 barrels of crude. In March, regulators recommended a $3 billion fine for Chevron Corp. after one of the company's offshore natural gas platforms caught fire, in what environmentalists described as the worst gas spill in African history in terms of volumes released. www.rigzone.com/news/article.asp?a_id=120778__________________________________ BP Products Agrees to Pay for Oil Spill Response Violation - September 27, 2012 BP PLC has agreed to pay $210,000 to settle alleged violations of oil spill response violations at a Maryland facility, the Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency said. The EPA alleged that BP Products North America violated federal regulations requiring oil storage facilities to conduct drills and exercises to respond to oil spills at its Curtis Bay Terminal in Maryland. www.rigzone.com/news/article.asp?a_id=121022

DISASTERS Prestige oil disaster trial begins in Spain The trial over the largest oil spill in Spain's history has begun, ten years after the Prestige sank off the Iberian coast. Critics argue high-level government officials are not being held accountable for the disaster. Four men went on trial in the northern Spanish city of La Coruna Tuesday, including the tanker's Greek captain. More than 200 witnesses and experts are expected to testify during the proceedings, which are set to last into May, 2013. www.dw.de/prestige-oil-disaster-trial-begins-in-spain/a-16309770Date 16.10.2012

Fracking to blame for well blowout near Innisfail 'Company essentially drilled too close to another well bore,' says Alberta's energy regulator Posted: Dec 12, 2012 1:20 PM MT Last Updated: Dec 12, 2012 2:24 PM MT An investigation into the blowout of a well near Innisfail last January shows fracking was responsible. The blowout spewed nearly 500 barrels of oil and water onto a central Alberta field, affecting 4.5 hectares and requiring the removal of just over 1,000 tonnes of soil and snow. The Energy Resources Conservation Board released the results of its investigation on Wednesday. The board found Midway Energy didn't follow its own guidelines — which says its drill hole should have been at least 135 metres from any other well — when it began pumping high-pressure fluids underground in an attempt to release oil deposits. "Midway did not conduct the fracturing operation in compliance with its own internal procedures," concluded the board's investigation. The result was a geyser of oil, natural gas, process water and fracking fluids from an adjacent well owned by Wild Stream Exploration, which has since been sold and now operates as Raging River Exploration. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/story/2012/12/12/calgary-fracking-innisfail-ercb.html
