More Dead Fish and Birds in the U.S. February 17, 2011 In Louisiana, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is trying to determine what killed about 200 birds in south Lake Charles. Local news stations are reporting that approximately 100 birds were found dead in two separate locations about a mile apart. Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologist Kori Legleu says the birds are tree swallows – birds that are common in southwest Louisiana, and travel in tight flocks. www.africanaonline.com/2011/02/more-dead-fish-and-birds-in-the-u-s/#

Peculiar geese deaths baffle wildlife officials in Wisconsin Posted on February 18, 2011 February 18, 2011 – MADISON, WS - Several dozen Canada geese along western Lake Erie’s shoreline have recently died or are presumed dead while others have become so sick they cannot hold up their heads, fly, or maintain control of their motor functions. State wildlife investigators are stumped, awaiting word on tests that a national wildlife laboratory in Wisconsin has been doing on some of the dead birds. “They will fall out of the sky and have trouble staying upright,” said Dave Sherman, a biologist at the Crane Creek Wildlife Research Station the Ohio Department of Natural Resources operates in Ottawa County. Symptoms began manifesting themselves first with mallards about two or three weeks ago. “Now, it’s mostly geese we’re seeing,” he said. The bulk of the problem appears to be in the Oregon area, Mr. Sherman said, in the vicinity of open water near FirstEnergy Corp.’s coal-fired Bay Shore power plant, where birds typically congregate this time of year. He said he has been getting about a dozen calls a day from area residents reporting new sightings or seeking answers about birds they’ve seen. “They’re throwing their heads back. They’re losing all balance and literally almost all back-somersault and have a seizure,” according to Laura Zitzelberger, operations director at Nature’s Nursery. At least eight or nine of about a dozen geese that were brought to Nature’s Nursery either died or had to be euthanized. theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com/2011/02/18/the-peculiar-geese-deaths-baffle-wildlife-officials-in-wisconsin/

Mass deaths of migratory blackbirds reported in Sevastopol 19.02.2011, 16.15 Dozens of dead birds lie on the Kamyshovskoye highway, in the Kazachya bay and other coastal areas. As an ornithologist, an expert on biodiversity with the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Birds, Alexander Grinchenko, explained to anxious residents, for the present it is early to state that the blackbirds died from infection or were poisoned by food. These are migratory birds, and they had flown, most likely, from North Africa, where no epidemics are reported. Specialists of the Sevastopol state veterinary centre are investigating the case. The first examination showed that the deaths were caused, most probably, by frost. A cyclone brought heavy snow and frosty weather to the Crimea, including the southern coast, which were not expected by the birds after their hard travel across the sea. Sevastopol is their first place to rest. Samples of tissues of dead birds have been sent to Simferopol for expert examination. The diagnosis will be established within a week, a veterinary clinic source said. And for the present, specialists recommend to burn the dead blackbirds. www.itar-tass.com/eng/level2.html?NewsID=15970952&PageNum=0

Mystery as dead birds pile up on city street 5th February 2011 What killed hundreds of dead birds found on a Rotorua central city street? Nobody seems to know. Rotorua mother Glyssa Bosworth was walking down Amohau St this week when her 1-year-old daughter pointed out a bird on the ground. Then she saw a few more. "I could smell something absolutely horrific," Miss Bosworth told The Daily Post. She turned around and saw "hundreds" of them on the ground around the base of a tall tree in the reserve near the entrance to the Central Mall. She said she had never seen that many dead birds before. www.rotoruadailypost.co.nz/have-your-say/news/mystery-as-dead-birds-pile-up-on-city-street/3939418/

Starving bald eagles falling from sky in B.C., expert says February 23, 2011 VICTORIA — Starving bald eagles are falling out of the sky on Vancouver Island, a wildlife expert says, perhaps over a lack of salmon runs in the region last month. Maj Birch, manager of the Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society, is caring for seven eagles in the Comox Valley. She said several others had died before they could be helped. www.canada.com/technology/Starving+bald+eagles+falling+from+expert+says/4334204/story.html

Mystery surrounds bird deaths 19 May, 2011 02:41 PM Galahs dropping dead and falling from trees in Oxley Park remain a mystery but the possibility of poisoning seems unlikely following an autopsy by a veterinarian. The vet from Central West Livestock Health and Pest Authority is investigating the deaths of a large number of birds that were found dead under trees throughout the park on Sunday morning. Some were also seen in the grounds of TAFE. The birds did not have any obvious injuries or wounds and were all lying in a spread wing position. Some of the birds will now be sent off to the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute at Menangle for further testing in case any exotic, notifiable disease is the culprit. www.warrenadvocate.com.au/news/local/news/general/mystery-surrounds-bird-deaths/2168605.aspx

Starving blackbirds resort to cannibalism after dry spring and early summer leaves them without worms Last updated at 3:49 PM on 17th June 2011 The average blackbird's weight drops from 130g to 90g The weather has forced their diet of worms too far underground for the birds to feed. As a result, gardeners have witnessed blackbirds resorting to desperate measures to avoid going hungry. 'Taking tadpoles, slow worms and mice is not normal behaviour.' The mistle thrush and song thrush have also been affected by the unseasonably warm weather. Parts of Britain this year enjoyed the hottest and driest spring for more than a century. Last year, experts warned that the overpowering glare of street lights was disrupting the sleep patterns of song birds and forcing them to start the dawn chorus too early in the morning. Researchers said blackbirds, blue tits and robins are so exhausted by their early starts in towns and cities, they are more likely to be hunted by predators as the day wears on. www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2004758/Starving-blackbirds-resort-cannibalism-dry-spring-early-summer-leaves-worms.html

Thousands of dead birds wash ashore at Wasaga Beach Published On Sat Oct 22 2011 Thousands of dead birds have flooded the shores of Georgian Bay in a scene that locals compared to the devastation from an oil spill. Dead loons, ducks and seagulls covered “every foot” of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park’s shorelines on Saturday, said local Faye Ego, who walks her dog there daily. “It’s like when you see the oil slicks,” Ego said. “It turns your stomach. It’s awful.” Between 5,000 and 6,000 dead waterfowl are scattered along a 3-kilometre stretch near Wasaga Beach, said Ontario Provincial Police Const. Peter Leon. Botulism appears to be the culprit behind the masses of dead birds based on information from the Ministry of Natural Resources, police said. The deadly disease is caused by toxins that lake-bottom bacteria produce under certain conditions. Fish were likely infected, then died and floated to the surface. A “free-for-all eating frenzy for the waterfowl” ensued, Leon said, which subsequently resulted in their deaths. Stormy and windy weather over the past couple days pushed the dead birds to shore. He is unsure who will be responsible for cleaning up the lifeless waterfowl, which included mallards and pintail ducks. Tourism to the area is unlikely to be affected because it is not high season, he said. Dead birds have been appearing on the area’s beaches for the past few weeks, he added. And dead sturgeons, known to be bottom feeders, started washing up in August, Ego said. www.thestar.com/news/article/1074385--thousands-of-dead-birds-wash-ashore-at-wasaga-beach

Thousands of birds make crash landing in Utah POSTED: Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011 ST. GEORGE, Utah - Thousands of migratory birds were killed or injured after apparently mistaking a Wal-Mart parking lot, football fields and other snow-covered areas of southern Utah for bodies of water and plummeting to the ground in what one state wildlife expert called the worst mass bird crash she'd ever seen. Crews went to work cleaning up the dead birds and rescuing the injured survivors after the creatures crash-landed in the St. George area Monday night. By midday Wednesday, volunteers had helped rescue more than 3,000 birds, releasing them into a nearby pond. There's no count on how many died, although officials estimate it's upwards of 1,500. www.bellinghamherald.com/2011/12/14/2310925/thousands-of-birds-make-crash.html
