Dying birds stir extinction fears Last updated 05:00 22/01/2011 Little penguins are dying in their hundreds, leading conservationists to fear they are starving as a result of the La Nina weather system. Other seabirds are washing up dead on beaches, raising concerns that species could become extinct if climate change causes extreme weather events to become more frequent. At Wellington Zoo, two starving little blue penguin chicks have been brought in this week. One died on Wednesday and the other, found at Lyall Bay, was hanging on to life yesterday. The zoo's veterinary science manager, Lisa Argilla, said petrels were also starving around Wellington's south coast, and five shags had been brought in this month. "They're unable to find enough food. We've had a lot of starvations and a lot of mortalities." www.stuff.co.nz/environment/4569240/Dying-birds-stir-extinction-fears

More bird doom, this time Holland! Why would all these birds die in one small area? I didn't have time to take photo's of all the birds and the ones on the other side of the road where impossible to reach, I would conservatly estimate 50+ birds in less than a Kilometer? bigwobblenews.blogspot.com/2011/01/blog-post.html

Japan on alert after finding dead birds Published: Jan. 3, 2011 at 11:08 PM The reports included one that a hooded crane was found dead on the Izumi Plain in Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Japan, the largest wild crane wintering site and the nation's leading poultry-raising area. The reports said 23 birds were found dead following a search in Tottori in the north. The birds were being tested. In Toyama Prefecture, also in the north, a dead mute swan led to inspections of nearby poultry farms. In Hyogo Prefecture on Japan's Inland Sea, officials decided to stop displaying white storks, a national treasure, to prevent exposure to any likely infected wild birds. www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2011/01/03/Japan-on-alert-after-finding-dead-birds/UPI-41861294114121/

Ornithology Avian Respiration The avian respiratory system delivers oxygen from the air to the tissues and also removes carbon dioxide. In addition, the respiratory system plays an important role in thermoregulation (maintaining normal body temperature). The avian respiratory system is different from that of other vertebrates, with birds having relatively small lungs plus nine air sacs that play an important role in respiration (but are not directly involved in the exchange of gases). Birds exhibit some variation in lung structure and, specifically, in the arrangement of parabronchi. Most birds have two sets of parabronchi, the paleopulmonic (‘ancient lung’) and neopulmonic (‘new lung’) parabronchi. However, the neopulmonic region is absent in some birds (e.g., penguins) and poorly developed in others (e.g., storks [Ciconiidae] and ducks [Anatidae]). In songbirds (Passeriformes), pigeons (Columbiformes), and gallinaceous birds (Galliformes), the neopulmonic region of the lung is well-developed (Maina 2008). people.eku.edu/ritchisong/birdrespiration.html
