- Viruses are pieces of nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) wrapped in a thin coat of protein that replicate only within the cells of living hosts.
- Bacteria are one-cell microorganisms with a simple cellular organization whose nucleus lacks a membrane.
- Parasites may be protozoa, yeasts, or multicellular organisms such as fungi or worms that live in or on a host to obtain nourishment without providing any benefit to the host.

Cat Parasite Affects Everything We Feel and Do Aug. 9, 2006 Toxoplasma, he notes, is "frighteningly amazing." It can change the personality of a rat so much that the rat surrenders itself to a cat, just as the parasite wanted. The parasite's eggs are shed in a cat's feces. A rat comes along, eats the feces, and becomes infected. The behavior of the rat undergoes a dramatic change, making the rat more adventuresome and more likely to hang out around cats. The cat eats the rat, and the parasite completes its life cycle. abcnews.go.com/Technology/DyeHard/story?id=2288095parasite: Toxoplasma gondii.

May 24th, 2009 at 9:40 am Scientists Warn Virus Could Cause Heart Disease In Adults By the age of 40, most people carry the virus cytomegalovirus (CMV), which usually lies dormant. A member of the herpes family, it is spread through bodily fluids, only showing symptoms in those with weakened immune systems, such as transplant patients. Yet, according to researchers at Beth Israel Medical Centre in the US, it may be unknowingly raising blood pressure and hardening arteries in 30 per cent of those infected with it. You can find out if you have been infected with CMV by requesting a blood test from your GP. www.impactlab.net/2009/05/24/scientists-warn-virus-could-cause-heart-disease-in-adults/virus: cytomegalovirus (CMV)

Sussex farms hit by new sheep virus - 27 01 2012 Experts think that SBV, which was first identified in parts of Northern Europe last summer, travelled to the UK via infected midges. Early signs of the disease included a reduced milk yield and fever and it was only later that vets realised the virus also caused stillbirths and miscarriages as well as serious birth deformities on the affected farms. www.sussex.org.uk/sussex-farms-hit-by-new-sheep-virus/Schmallenburg virus (SBV)

February 22, 2012 at 5:54 PM EDT To Kill Parasites, Fruit Flies Self Medicate With Alcohol Many fruit flies are in a constant fight for their lives against endoparasitoid wasps. These wasps, not much bigger than edge of a dime, infect as many as half of the larvae Schlenke's lab collects to study. They're "pretty mean little aliens," Schlenke said. They lay their eggs inside the body cavity of the baby fruit flies, and then they inject the infected insects with venom that suppresses their immune systems. The wasps feed on the flies, slowly eating them from the inside out, until the fly is gone and all that is left in the pupa is a wasp. www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/2012/02/to-kill-parasites-fruit-flies-self-medicate-with-alcohol.html

Cat Parasite Affects Everything We Feel and Do Toxoplasma gondii. ScienceDaily (Mar. 11, 2009) — Scientists have discovered how the toxoplasmosis parasite may trigger the development of schizophrenia and other bipolar disorders... Toxoplasmosis, which is transmitted via cat faeces (found on unwashed vegetables) and raw or undercooked infected meat, is relatively common, with 10-20% of the UK population and 22% of the US population estimated to carry the parasite as cysts. Most people with the parasite are healthy, but for those who are immune-suppressed -- and particularly for pregnant women -- there are significant health risks that can occasionally be fatal. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/03/090311085151.htm

Gold-pooping bacteria could be modern day equivalent of the Philosopher’s stone By Scott Sutherland | Geekquinox – 8 hours ago Kazem Kashefi, an assistant professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, and Adam Brown, an associate professor of electronic art and intermedia, both at the University of Michigan, have put together a combination science and art exhibit called 'The Great Work of the Metal Lover', named after 'The Great Work' — the supposed process by which an alchemist makes a philosopher's stone. The exhibit, which looks like a giant alchemical experiment, contains the bacteria while it is fed the gold chloride, and it takes a week or so to consume the toxic chemical, leaving behind tiny spheres of gold. ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/geekquinox/gold-pooping-bacteria-could-modern-day-equivalent-philosopher-173240759.html

24 January 2013 Last updated at 08:18 ET Antibiotic 'apocalypse' warning TuberculosisAntibiotics have been one of the greatest success stories in medicine. However, bacteria are a rapidly adapting foe which find new ways to evade drugs. MRSA rapidly became one of the most feared words in hospitals wards and there are growing reports of resistance in strains of E. coli, tuberculosis and gonorrhoea. Prof Davies [Chief medical officer for England, Prof Dame Sally Davies] said: "It is clear that we might not ever see global warming, the apocalyptic scenario is that when I need a new hip in 20 years I'll die from a routine infection because we've run out of antibiotics." She said there was only one useful antibiotic left to treat gonorrhoea. www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-21178718
