green roof projectWelcome to the project! We intend to examine the feasibility of green roofs (extensive roof gardens) for residential scale construction. As you know, green roofs are common in Germany, France, Switzerland, and England, and are gaining a foothold in Canada and the U.S. Documentation of Seattle-area demonstration green roofs is available on the photos page. www.hadj.net/green-roofs/project-info.html_____________________________ EcoBuilding Guild Demonstration Green Roofs Huppert roofTorching Down Filter Fabric Planted Roof Spitzer roofMembrane Installation Drain Mat & Filter Fabric Jute Covering Taproot roofRoof Deck Drain Mat & Slope Tame 2 Planted Roof Logan roofRibs Planted Roof Balderston roofAdhesive SlopeTame 2 Planted Roof Mazurek roofRoof Shape Metal Grid Planted Roof Pickering Barn roofsPlanting Roof #1 Applying Soil Roof #2 Watering Roof #3 Sproulle-Radke roofWorking Under the Tarp Soil Conveyor Planting Jon Alexander roofPlanters Membrane Planted Roof Other Green Roofs Close-Up Codorniu-Artesa Winery From Above Garden Roof Swiss Ecoroof LDS-Meadow Vancouver Library Garden Roof Garden Commercial Roofs Sloped Green Roof Sloped Green Roof Sloped Green Roof www.hadj.net/green-roofs/photos.html

Gardening Group Aims To Create Green City Dofa Fasila & Ulma Haryanto | February 21, 2011 From the seed of an idea floated on Twitter in November, a new social movement that encourages urban farming in the capital has finally bloomed with its official launch on Sunday. Ridwan Kamil, a prominent architect who started the group with the hashtag #jakartaberkebun, spoke at the launch at Springhill Golf Residence in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. He said the Jakarta Berkebun (Jakarta Gardening) movement aimed to turn thousands of hectares of abandoned and vacant land across the city into useful green space. “Jakarta’s green open space continues to decrease, but there are some places that can be harnessed and used as green space, preventing it from becoming garbage dumps and the source of diseases,” he said. Ridwan said Jakarta would be a pilot project for a wider Indonesia Berkebun, which plans to launch similar initiatives in cities including Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Medan. www.thejakartaglobe.com/news/gardening-group-aims-to-create-green-city/423829

A Lufa Farm on Your Roof? Our farm on Antonio-Barbeau is the first and a prototype for larger, expanded farms that we expect to build in Montreal and in other cities in Canada and the United States. If you are a building owner, or if you are planning the construction or renovation for a new building, there are many possible benefits in considering a farm for your roof. These include the following: - Opportunity for new income from roof spaces
- Improved insulation and reduced heating/cooking expense
- Potential LEED points
- Increasing the “green” profile of your development by supporting a more sustainable way of farming
- For residential construction, providing residents with access to exceptional fresh produce
- Differentiating your building in the marketplace

Business idea mushrooms from coffee grounds Sunday, November 15, 2009 Nikhil Arora and Alejandro Velez's plans after graduating from the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business didn't include becoming farmers. Oyster mushrooms grow out of a Bttrventures kit.But they took a detour in the spring during a business ethics class, where the two learned that coffee grounds, one of the country's largest waste streams, could be used as a medium for growing mushrooms. www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/11/13/HOH51AI9JG.DTL

To Find Fields to Farm in New York City, Just Look Up Published: July 11, 2012 Fed by the interest in locally grown produce, the new farm operations in New York are selling greens and other vegetables by the boxful to organically inclined residents, and by the bushel to supermarket chains like Whole Foods. The main difference between this century and previous ones is location: whether soil-based or hydroponic, in which vegetables are grown in water rather than soil, the new farms are spreading on rooftops, perhaps the last slice of untapped real estate in the city. Mr. Flanner, the president and head farmer of the Brooklyn Grange farming operation, picked greens last week for a restaurant in Brooklyn. “In terms of rooftop commercial agriculture, New York is definitely a leader at this moment,” said Joe Nasr, co-author of “Carrot City: Creating Places for Urban Agriculture” and a researcher at the Centre for Studies in Food Security at Ryerson University in Toronto. “I expect it will continue to expand, and much more rapidly, in the near future.” www.nytimes.com/2012/07/12/nyregion/in-rooftop-farming-new-york-city-emerges-as-a-leader.html
