Scots Pine Trees Dying Across Midwest November 7, 2010
For many years, residents in Bel Aire have noticed the pine needles on their Scots Pine trees are turning brown, and soon after the discovery, the entire tree was dead.
"When you looked out and saw that they died in about a week to two weeks, it made you want to cry," said Diane Martin, Bel Aire.
Martin has now lost three 30-foot trees, all of them Scots Pines.
"All of the trees had been treated for a number of years for any of the common diseases that pine trees get, and they'd been treated twice a year. This last year, we hoped to do the pine wilt treatment in hopes it wouldn't get it, but it was obviously too late, because it did get it," said Martin.
Yes, trees in the inland Northwest, especially in British Columbia, are increasingly stained in azure shades. The explanation is such a perfect example of ecological interactions that, like foxes and rabbits, it might start appearing in biology textbooks. cascadiascorecard.typepad.com/blog/2004/08/index.html
Southern Pine Beetle - Dendroctonus frontalis The southern pine beetle (SPB) is one of pine's most destructive insect pests in the southern U.S., Mexico, and Central America. Because populations build rapidly to outbreak proportions and large numbers of trees are killed, SPB generates considerable concern among managers of southern pine forests. threatsummary.forestthreats.org/threats/threatSummaryViewer.cfm?threatID=11

Cloaked Worms and Viruses They’re Not Just for Computers
By Michael Edward
While I was doing some research on computer viruses and worms for a security program I’m developing, something hit me: What if there was a parallel between these computer virus-worms with newly discovered biological viruses found in humans and animals?
In my preliminary research, I began to see various patterns, such as computer virus-worms being discovered or released right before major world events. That was when I decided it would also be important to research the names of these virus-worms.
Although the technical meanings are different, many times a worm is improperly called a virus and vice versa, so it’s important to understand what both computer & biological virus-worms are.
Jan 22, 2008 7:30 pm US/Mountain Duo Makes Pine Beetle Infested Wood Their Business
SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) ― A one-of-a-kind business has found a way to turn trees dying from pine beetle infestation into a useful product that can be used for homes and other structures.
Breckenridge Timber to Log takes the dying trees while they are still fresh, strips off the bark, and produces a finished log similar to Lincoln Logs. But what's unique about the wood is its color.
"It has a unique blue stain, commonly known as blue denim," said business partner Matt Dayton, whose parents Gene and Therese began the operation. "People use it for paneling, cabinets ... all sorts of things."
City trees are becoming sick from wireless radiation from local area networks and mobile phones, according to a European study.
Nov 19, 2010 2:09 pm
Radiation from Wi-Fi networks is harmful to trees, causing significant variations in growth, as well as bleeding and fissures in the bark, according to a recent study in the Netherlands.
All deciduous trees in the Western world are affected, according to the study by Wageningen University. The city of Alphen aan den Rijn ordered the study five years ago after officials found unexplained abnormalities on trees that couldn't be ascribed to a virus or bacterial infection.
Additional testing found the disease to occur throughout the Western world. In the Netherlands, about 70 percent of all trees in urban areas show the same symptoms, compared with only 10 percent five years ago. Trees in densely forested areas are hardly affected.
Sudden death for thousands of trees GMT 08 Jan 2011
Already 4 million trees have been felled or marked for destruction.
More are expected to be chopped down in the coming years because the warmer, wetter conditions expected with climate change encourage the spread of the disease.
In the latest cull, a landowner in the Quantock Hills in Somerset was forced to cut down 50,000 trees, while the National Trust chopped down 10,000 larch trees in the area. Landowners face crippling costs for felling sick trees, while walkers are urged to disinfect boots to stop P. ramorum, which is a fungal disease, spreading on their feet.
AMERICA'S TREES ARE DYING by Charles E. Little (1995)
Some argue that the progression of tree death and forest decline in this century, and especially since World War II, is either coincidence or simply a matter of selective reporting. Everything is all right; it is just the natural ebb and flow of nature. But that is not what I have learned from the scores of scientific scholars I have interviewed, and the mountain of papers I have studied. They say something else. What these distinguished sources are describing is a pandemic -- an epidemic that is everywhere.
OUR FORESTS ARE GROWING SILENT
The widespread deaths of forest-dwelling species also strongly suggest an extreme ecosystem imbalance. Increasing levels of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation are leaking through the thinning stratospheric ozone shield and harming not only trees. Researchers at Oregon State University have found that the frogs living in the forest pools and streamsides of the Cascade Mountains are failing to regenerate because increased UV-B radiation scrambles the cells of frog eggs, which lay uncovered in shallow water. The decline of amphibians of all types has been noted since the 1970s.
THE DESERT'S DYING CACTI FOREST DEATH IN COAL RIVER VALLEY
A lot of carpenters are putting it to use anyway. I don't know why it's not logged commercially. I guess loggers like the live ones better. It's a nice wood imo.
HAND CRAFTED PINE BEETLE FURNITURE
All of the tables that are hand crafted by Randy Blunt are made from trees that were subject to the pine beetle blight in the Rocky Mountain Region. Each table is unique and Randy uses a book-matching technique which creates a mirror like image of each side of the table. Go to the furniture page to see tables he has available. Religion and Ecology Among China's Blang People ScienceDaily (Sep. 22, 2011)
However, during a three-month annual Buddhist festival that marks the beginning of the rainy season, there is a prohibition on cutting down large trees. While in traditional times the trees might have been cut down for building houses, these days they are cut down to increase the land available for tea production. Observance of the tree-cutting injunction has a positive effect on the local ecology by slowing the tree removal. It also demonstrates how indigenous religion and culture can be an ally in promoting conservation efforts.
Texas Drought May Have Killed 500 Million Trees December 20, 2011
According to the American-Statesmen, the loss of plant-life in Texas due to the drought may be worse yet. The study did not factor in the millions of trees that perished due to drought-related wildfires, which, in 2011, were particularly damaging.
Bark beetles, climate change and our future December 28, 2011
Recently, a classmate from the University of B.C. asked what I thought about Canada backing out of the Kyoto agreement, and if there was any connection between the insatiable bark beetles infesting the province’s forests and the rising temperatures on Earth.
First, trees are effectively the greatest CO2 warehouses ever created. For every metric ton of wood grown, 1.5 metric tons of CO2 is absorbed and one metric ton of oxygen is released.
Destroyed Burns Lake sawmill warned of unsafe levels of sawdust in December Last updated Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012 12:11AM EST
Shortly after the blast, welder Bruce Disher said he had often noticed “phenomenal” levels of dust in the mill, caused by the cutting of excessively dry pine wood harvested from forests ravaged by the pine beetle.
Two B.C. sawmill workers are still missing after an explosion at their Burns Lake mill Friday. Fire Chief Jim McBride says he has never seen anything like the mill fire in his 36 years with the service.
Climate change drying out forests in western Canada Date: Monday Jan. 30, 2012 3:49 PM ET
In the West, trees were growing slower as well as dying younger. Peng and his colleagues concluded that western boreal forests were producing two tonnes of wood less per hectare in 2008 compared to the early 1970s.
