8 arrested in organ transplant scandal updated 8/5/2010 10:16:46 AM ET KIEV, Ukraine — Ukraine's Interior Ministry says four surgeons and four others have been arrested for taking part in a scheme to recruit organ donors from former Soviet countries and transplant the organs into wealthy foreigners. The head of the ministry's department on human trafficking, Yuriy Kucher, says the scheme was headed by an Israeli citizen who was arrested last month. Kucher said Thursday that recruiters sought mostly kidneys from people in Ukraine and other countries. Most of those who eventually donated organs were impoverished young women, paid up to $10,000. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38574867/ns/health-more_health_news/

WIKI: Organ transplantation in Israel is regulated by two laws passed in 2008. The first law defines "brain death" as an indication of death for all legal purposes, including organ donation. A second law provides financial and other benefits to living donors and outlaws organ trafficking. Despite this, due to the large population of observant Jews in Israel and misconceptions about what is permissible under Jewish law, the rate of organ donation in Israel is significantly lower than in most Western countries. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organ_transplantation_in_Israel

Killing Falun Gong Practitioners for Profit Last Updated: May 19, 2010 • Since June, 2007, Chinese patients have been given priority access to organ transplants, taking precedence over foreigners. • Websites in China which formerly advertised prices and short waiting times for transplants have disappeared. Matas and I have archived the sites, but the sites are no longer visible from their sources. • The government of China now accepts that this sourcing of organs from prisoners is improper. Deputy Health Minister Huang Jeifu, at the time of the announcement of an organ donor pilot project in August 2009, stated that executed prisoners "are definitely not a proper source for organ transplants". • Taiwan has banned the visit of Chinese doctors brokering organ transplants. • The major transplant hospitals in Queensland, Australia have banned the training of Chinese surgeons. • Israel has passed a law banning the sale and brokerage of organs and has ended funding through the health insurance system of transplants for their nationals in China. • Belgian senator Patrik Vankrunkelsven and Canadian Member of Parliament Borys Wrzesnewskyj have each introduced into their respective Parliaments extraterritorial legislation banning transplant tourism. Both would penalize any transplant patient who receives an organ without consent of the donor where the patient knew or ought to have known of the absence of consent. • The World Medical Association has entered into an agreement with the Chinese Medical Association that organs of prisoners and other individuals in custody must not be used for transplantation unless the recipients are members of their immediate family. • The Transplantation Society has opposed both the transplantation of organs from prisoners and the presentations of studies involving patient data or samples from recipients of organs or tissues from prisoners. www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/35788/

Focus on Israel: Harvesting Haitian Organs Tue, 2010-01-26 23:17 She stated: "....Israeli organ harvesting - sometimes with Israeli governmental funding and the participation of high Israeli officials, prominent Israeli physicians, and Israeli ministries - have been documented for many years. Among the victims have been Palestinians." Nancy Scheper-Hughes is a UC Berkeley Professor of Medical Anthropology, founder of Organ Watch, author of scholarly books and articles on the subject, and "unflinchingly honest in (citing) the Israeli connection." ... Israeli "Transplant Tourism" Rich Israelis take advantage, availing themselves of what's called "transplant tourism," traveling wherever a needed organ can be found, sometimes from fresh corpses, usually from the desperately poor. The Israeli government acts as facilitator, providing subsidies of up to $80,000 for "transplant holidays." According to Scheper-Hughes, Israeli officials exhibit "amazing tolerance....toward outlawed 'transplant tourism.' " She said the Israeli Ministry of Defense is involved in a practice by which "bodies are broken, dismembered, fragmented, transported, processed, and sold in the interests of a more socially advantaged population....," Israel engaging in more of this globally than any other nation. Its medical teams apparently are doing it in Haiti, exploiting fresh corpses and the living. The Manar TV cited You Tube said "there are people operating in Haiti who do not have a conscience and are members of the search and rescue teams, including the Israeli occupation forces," far from home harvesting Haitian organs, and the pickings are plentiful. warisacrime.org/node/49603

Baroness Tonge fired over outburst against Israeli soldiers in Haiti Baroness Tonge, a Liberal Democrat frontbencher, has been sacked after calling for an inquiry into allegations that Israeli soldiers supporting the relief effort in Haiti had been involved with organ-trafficking. 7:30AM GMT 13 Feb 2010 Party leader Nick Clegg removed Lady Tonge as a Lib Dem health spokeswoman in the Lords on Friday, describing her remarks as ''wrong, distasteful and provocative''. It is the second time she has been fired for making controversial comments about Israel. The latest row followed accusations in the online Palestine Telegraph - of which Lady Tonge is a patron - that members of the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) had been harvesting body parts in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/liberaldemocrats/7225643/Baroness-Tonge-fired-over-outburst-against-Israeli-soldiers-in-Haiti.html

China’s Execution, Inc. The People’s Republic Has Long Been Suspected of Selling Organs From Prisoners. Now One New York Doctor Knows the Rumors Are True. Tuesday, May 1 2001 Three years ago, Dr. Thomas Diflo's moral nightmare walked into his examination room: a patient freshly implanted with a kidney bought from China's death row, where prisoners are killed—sometimes for minor offenses—and their organs harvested. All guts, no glory: Dr. Thomas Diflo, the first American doctor to talk publicly about the issue Since then, Dr. Diflo, director of the renal transplant program at the New York University Medical Center, has seen half a dozen such people, typically young Chinese American women. The surgeon says his patients weren't distressed about snatching organs from the condemned, but he was overwhelmed by the implications. Unable to shoulder the burden alone, on January 11, Diflo took his "horror at a real ethical quagmire" to the medical center's Ethics Committee. www.villagevoice.com/2001-05-01/news/china-s-execution-inc/- In China, human rights groups say, citizens have been executed for nonviolent offenses like taking bribes, credit card theft, small-scale tax evasion, and stealing truckloads of vegetables. Political dissidents have also been sentenced to death. Chinese embassy officials did not respond to requests for comment, but in the past the government has denied promoting the for-profit organ trade. - The trafficking of human organs from Chinese executions to American residents is "something we've always known was going on but something we've never been able to document," says an American investigator working for the Laogai Research Foundation, a group founded by renowned human rights crusader Harry Wu and named for the gulags of China.

Kosovo organ trafficking case "gains new dimension" Source: RTS, Tanjug Monday 23.01.2012 | 16:24 BELGRADE -- Deputy War Crimes Prosecutor Bruno Vekarić said Monday that the investigation into human organ trafficking in Kosovo was "gaining a new dimension". A resolution is in sight, he told state broadcaster RTS in Belgrade on Sunday, and commended Russia's reported involvement in the probe. www.b92.net/eng/news/crimes-article.php?yyyy=2012&mm=01&dd=23&nav_id=78431___________________________ Part Two of The Current, Friday February 3, 2012 Organ Trafficking in Kosovo We started this segment with a clip from from news coverage of a high-profile case of apparent organ trafficking in Kosovo. It all began in 2008 when a young Turkish man collapsed at the Pristina Airport. He told authorities that someone had stolen his kidney. He led police to the Medicus clinic. Police now believe the clinic to be the hub of an organ trafficking ring. Seven people are standing trial, including a former government health official. They're accused of luring impoverished Russians, Moldovans and Turks to sell their kidneys with promises of big cash pay outs. Authorities say the promises were false. But there is lots of cash involved. The police believe the clinic received up to $200,000 per operation from foreigners willing to pay for a new organ. Jonathan Ratel is spearheading the case against the accused. He is a Canadian lawyer serving as the special prosecutor for the European Union. He joined us from Pristine Kosovo. Phone Logs Reveal Top Chinese Officials’ Knowledge of Organ Harvesting Last Updated: May 4, 2012 EG: It confirms some points we knew. Liaoning Province was a harvesting center. Military bases, and presumably, military hospitals, were used as detention bases. As we surmised through Wang Lijun’s oversight of thousands of transplant operations, Bo Xilai was involved. It also helps to confirm something we strongly suspected. We know China is a surveillance state and military hospitals are no exception. Thus the PLAC had to know. Well, as Li Changchun says: “Zhou Yongkang is in charge….He knows it.” www.theepochtimes.com/n2/china-news/phone-logs-reveal-top-chinese-officials-knowledge-of-organ-harvesting-230616-all.html_________________ China's hi-tech 'death van' where criminals are executed and then their organs are sold on black market UPDATED: 23:14 GMT, 27 March 2009 Death will come soon for Jiang Yong.
