DNI: Created in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) serves as the top intelligence official in the United States government. The DNI oversees what is known as the Intelligence Community, which consists of more than a dozen civilian and military agencies that collect information on threats against the United States. The 16 agencies include Air Force Intelligence, Army Intelligence, Central Intelligence Agency, Coast Guard Intelligence, Defense Intelligence Agency, Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, Department of the Treasury, Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Marine Corps Intelligence, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, National Reconnaissance Office, National Security Agency and Navy Intelligence.
Intelligence Chief Fired: Who Was Dennis Blair?
Saturday, May 22, 2010
No stranger to controversy, Dennis Blair wracked up plenty of trouble that ultimately cost him his post as director of national intelligence after only 16 months on the job.
Blair arrived as someone known to raise eyebrows. The former U.S. Navy admiral once went water skiing behind a combat vessel, and even ignored orders from civilian officials. But those gaffes came before Blair assumed his highest profile position, taking over the Office of the Director of National Intelligence...
In addition to EDO, Blair has served since March 2003 as a director of Tyco International Ltd., which was also involved in the F-22 program, supplying small electronic components. Blair also joined the board of directors of Iridium Satellite, LLC on July 26, 2007. Iridium builds spy satellites for use by the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), an ultra-secret agency that operates America’s fleet of military spy satellites. As Director of National Intelligence, Blair would oversee NRO operations. Blair also sits on the board of the Center for New American Security, a new centrist think tank specializing in national security issues. He was the John M. Shalikashvili Chair in National Security Studies at The National Bureau of Asian Research, and The Omar N. Bradley Chair in Strategic Leadership at Dickinson College and the US Army War College for 2007-2008.
