Report Details History of Abuse in Australian Military Published: June 15, 2012 SYDNEY, Australia — Newly released documents detail numerous cases of physical and sexual abuse of minors in Australia’s armed forces dating back to the 1950s, prompting Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Friday to raise the possibility of a high-level public inquiry. The cases are described in a confidential report commissioned by the Australian military last year and made public late Thursday by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Highly redacted extracts from the report had been released three months ago by Defense Minister Stephen Smith. What the ABC obtained, through a Freedom of Information request, was the full executive summary of the report. www.nytimes.com/2012/06/16/world/asia/report-details-history-of-abuse-in-australian-military.htmlDefence report details horrific tales of abuse - Updated June 15, 2012 02:33:57 www.abc.net.au/news/2012-06-14/defence-report-details-horrific-tales-of-abuse/4071324

George Pell tells sex abuse royal commission case against John Ellis was unfair 'from a Christian point of view' Updated Thu 27 Mar 2014, 12:54am AEDT At the heart of the so-called Ellis defence is a court ruling that the Catholic Church is not liable for the criminal activity of its clergy. The 'Ellis defence' explained - John Andrew Ellis was abused by Sydney Catholic priest Father Aidan Duggan over a period of about five years in the 1970s
- He raised the abuse with the Church in 2002 and two years later sued Duggan, then-Sydney Archbishop George Pell and the Roman Catholic Church for $100,000
- The Church offered Mr Ellis $30,000 but he rejected the offer saying it did not adequately acknowledge the damage the abuse caused
- After a protracted legal dispute Mr Ellis lost the case in 2007 with the NSW Court of Appeal ruling the Church's assets are held in property trusts and are protected from lawsuits against the clergy
- Sexual abuse victims are still able to sue individual members of the Church
A second man came forward with a complaint about the priest during the litigation www.abc.net.au/news/2014-03-26/lawyers-instructed-to-defend-church-to-send-a-message/5346110
