Bt-Corn: The Biggest GE Crop Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt, is a common soil bacterium whose genome contains genes for several proteins toxic to insects. For decades, Bt has been sprayed on fields as an organic pesticide; several major pests of corn that are difficult and expensive to control with chemical insecticides are susceptible to Bt. When sprayed on the surface of crops, however, Bt toxins break down quickly when exposed to ultraviolet light, and they also wash off in a strong rain. www.fas.org/biosecurity/education/dualuse-agriculture/2.-agricultural-biotechnology/bt-corn.html

Photos: Protests in Nepal Over Genetically Engineered Seeds December 6th, 2011 In Nepal, protests are building up against the use of genetically engineered seeds by biotechnology giant Monsanto, which reportedly has been operating in the country since 2004. The protests have prompted Nepal's new leadership to backtrack on the deal it made in September with Monsanto and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Kashish Das Shrestha, a contributor for BBC Nepali Service, has reported on the controversy, its origins and food security issues in Nepal. Today, his work was featured in The New York Times' Doth Earth blog. "An anti-Monsanto campaign has slowly gained momentum in the local press, the capital, and online, culminating in a silent protest near the U.S. embassy [on Nov. 25]. And the USAID and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives are in an awkward standoff," he wrote. Kashish sent us these photos of his time reporting on the building anti-Monsanto movement and the agricultural landscape in Nepal. asiasociety.org/blog/asia/photos-protests-nepal-over-genetically-engineered-seeds

ISIS Report 13/06/12 Syngenta Charged for Covering up Livestock Deaths from GM Corn Corporation faces criminal charges for concealing own study in which cows died after eating its genetically modified corn ISIS Report 13/06/12 Biotech giant Syngenta has been criminally charged with denying knowledge that its genetically modified (GM) Bt corn kills livestock during a civil court case that ended in 2007 [1]. Syngenta’s Bt 176 corn variety expresses an insecticidal Bt toxin (Cry1Ab) derived from the bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and a gene conferring resistance to glufosinate herbicides. EU cultivation of Bt 176 was discontinued in 2007. Similar varieties however, including Bt 11 sweet corn are currently cultivated for human and animal consumption in the EU. more: www.i-sis.org.uk/Syngenta_Charged_for_Covering_Up_Livestock_Deaths_from_GM_Corn.phpCows Ate GM Maize & Died www.i-sis.org.uk/CAGMMAD.php

-------------Happy End Game------------- Published on Saturday, August 4, 2012 by Common Dreams Outcry as Walmart OK's Monsanto GM Corn Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer, has confirmed to the Chicago Tribune that despite protests from environment and food-safety advocates, it will not restrict sales of genetically modified corn in its stores. The corn will not be labelled and consumers will not be notified that the sweet corn they are buying are engineered by agro-giant Monsanto and genetically-altered (GMO stands for genetically modified organism) to resist the toxic impact of being sprayed with chemical pesticides and herbicides. www.commondreams.org/headline/2012/08/04-0

“Safe” levels of GM Maize and Roundup can cause tumours, multiple organ damage and premature death in laboratory rats, finds first peer-reviewed lifetime feeding trial research.sustainablefoodtrust.org/#_message #GMfeedtrial Long term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize Article history: Received 11 April 2012 Accepted 2 August 2012 a b s t r a c t The health effects of a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize (from 11% in the diet), cultivated with or without Roundup, and Roundup alone (from 0.1 ppb in water), were studied 2 years in rats. In females, all treated groups died 2–3 times more than controls, and more rapidly. This difference was visible in 3 male groups fed GMOs. All results were hormone and sex dependent, and the pathological profiles were comparable. Females developed large mammary tumors almost always more often than and before controls, the pituitary was the second most disabled organ; the sex hormonal balance was modified by GMO and Roundup treatments. In treated males, liver congestions and ecrosis were 2.5–5.5 times higher. more: research.sustainablefoodtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Final-Paper.pdfKeywords: GMO, Roundup, NK603, Rat, Glyphosate-based herbicides, Endocrine disrupting effects

Stop the pipeline of new GE seeds! 2, 4-d sprayA suite of “next generation” GE seeds is heading for USDA approval, with the first application sitting on Agricultural Secretary Vilsack's desk right now. Of the 13 GE seeds in the pipeline, 10 are designed to withstand applications of specific herbicides. These crops — including Dow’s 2,4-D-resistant corn and Monsanto’s dicamba-resistant soybean — are designed to drive up the use of these volatile chemicals. More widespread use of 2,4-D and dicamba will result in more pesticide drift, destroying neighboring crops and placing the burden of increased costs and health risks on farmers and rural communities. Join us in urging Secretary Vilsack to stop the GE seed pipeline, starting by rejecting Dow's 2,4-D corn. action.panna.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=11896

Costa Rica approves GM corn | January 23, 2013 The local subsidiary of Monsanto operating in Costa Rica has been granted permission to grow genetically modified corn in the country. Costa Rica’s National Biosecurity Technical Commission announced the authorization for Delta & Pine Land Seed Ltda (D&PL), which is owned by Monsanto. The permission was granted by a majority vote. Monsanto will be allowed to plant one or two hectares of GM corn to obtain seeds or for research. The authorization does not allow for consumption or marketing within the country. All seed that is produced through the process will be exported. When D&PL requested permission to plant GM corn in the country, environmental and anti-GM groups protested the move. The country’s own top agricultural officials wrote a letter against the authorization of GM crops in their country. The letter came from the faculty of Agricultural Sciences and the faculty of Biology at the University of Costa Rica and the Coast Rica Agronomy Engineers’ Association. Approximately 443.1 hectares of biotech crops are grown in Costa Rica with the majority (394.3 hectares) being cotton. www.agprofessional.com/news/Costa-Rica-approves-GM-corn-187936831.html

North Dakota Corn Yield Trials Have Success with Conventional Corn Hybrids Conventional Corn Success | Northern Plot Non-GM Hybrid Yields 286 Bu. Mar. 10, 2013 With U.S. growers choosing to plant 88% of all corn acres to genetically engineered hybrids in 2012, one might think the day of conventional hybrids is over. Don't tell that to Walter Albus, research agronomist at Oakes Irrigation Research Site, Oakes, N.D. He reports that DS1803, a conventional hybrid from Dairyland, took second place in the irrigated yield trials with 286 bu./acre. Adding to the feat was the minimal inputs it received. more: cornandsoybeandigest.com/seed/north-dakota-corn-yield-trials-have-success-conventional-corn-hybrids-0
