South Dakota's cattle cataclysm: why isn't this horror news? Ranchers in South Dakota lost tens of thousands of cattle from a freak storm. Thanks to the shutdown, no one is paying attention Monday 14 October 2013 18.17 BST
Last weekend Atlas hit. It started with rain. The rain soaked the cows and chilled them to the bone. Inches and inches of rain fell. The rain made horrible mud. Then the winds started – 80mph winds, hurricane force. When the wind started, the rain changed to snow. A lot of snow. The cows were wet, muddy and they didn't have their winter jackets when the wind and snow came. Wet snow. Heavy snow.
By DANICA COTO 11/19/13 01:30 - the bioluminescence has dropped so much that tour operators have had to cancel trips and reimburse visitors, Guerrero said.
Fajardo city Mayor Anibal Melendez told reporters that the lagoon has been dark for at least eight days.
"We've never seen anything like that," he said.
Miguel Sastre, a biology professor at the University of Puerto Rico who has long studied Fajardo's bioluminescent lagoon, one of three in the territory, said it went nearly dark in 2003 for unknown reasons, but rebounded a couple of months later.
He said in a phone interview that his main concern this time is the construction of the water and sewer plant because it coincides with the drop in bioluminescence.
This unique bay contains up to 720,000 single-celled bioluminescent dinoflagellates per gallon of water. These half-plant, half-animal organisms emit a flash of bluish light when agitated at night. The high concentration of these creatures (Pyrodimium bahamense) can create enough light to read a book from. biobay.com/
HUNTING — A predator hunting derby organized out of Salmon will offer trophies and cash prizes up to $1,000 to hunters who kill wolves and coyotes on Dec. 28-29. The “Two-Day Coyote and Wolf Derby” is sponsored by Idaho for Wildlife, a nonprofit whose aim is “to fight against all legal and legislative attempts by the animal rights and anti-gun organizations” to impose restrictions on hunting or guns, according to the group's website. www.spokesman.com/blogs/outdoors/2013/dec/17/idaho-predator-hunting-derby-targets-wolves-coyotes/

PRELIMINARY SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF COPEPODS IN THE BIOLUMINESCENT BAY, LAGUNA GRANDE, FAJARDO, PUERTO RICO
Copepods dominate many marine zooplankton communities and help moderate energy flow through marine food webs, yet their impact on tropical bioluminescent lagoons is poorly documented. We assessed the spatial distribution of the copepod Acartia tonsa in relation to water quality parameters at the bioluminescent lagoon of Laguna Grande, Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Water-quality parameters were measured and plankton samples collected at nine stations from the ocean through the connecting channel to the end of the lagoon. Preliminary results suggested a statistically significant decline in copepod concentration with increasing water turbidity, declining oxygen concentration, and declining salinity. Higher copepod concentrations were located at the center of the lagoon where dissolved oxygen concentration and salinity were higher, turbidity was lower, and pH was within the range of 7.8-7.9. These results suggest a relationship between water quality, and the status of copepod populations, and highlight the importance of establishing a regular water quality and plankton community long-term monitoring program to provide critical information for the management and conservation of the bioluminescent lagoon. www.sgmeet.com/osm2014/viewabstract.asp?AbstractID=13675

Scientists believe they've solved the mystery of Peru's dolphin deaths February 25, 2014
According to El Comercio, researchers took tissue samples from four dolphins and one penguin who were found dead on beaches in Piura and Lambayeque. The samples showed that the animals had ingested a substance that had caused their internal organs, including the brain, kidneys, liver, and adrenal glands, to degenerate.
Though it’s hard to know exactly what the animals could have consumed in order to produce this kind of biological reaction, IMARPE scientists think that naturally-occurring toxins in certain algaes could be to blame. El Comercio reports that the poisonous compounds in the algae could have been activated by changes in temperature or pollution. Further tests will be carried out in order to confirm or disprove the algae hypothesis.
Bacterium causing US catfish deaths has Asian roots Jun 03, 2014
Since 2009, catfish farming in Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas has been seriously impacted by an emerging strain of Aeromonas hydrophila, which causes Aeromonas septicemia in catfish. A serious infection that can cause death in as little as 12 hours, Aeromonas septicemia's clinical signs include skin lesions and blood loss.
It's not clear how the bacterium was introduced in America, Liles says. It could be from importing Asian carp to America for aquatic weed control, or from transporting ornamental fish or contaminated processed seafood products from Asia. The spread of disease among farms also is not fully understood but could result from birds that move from pond to pond eating catfish, or from harvesting equipment that may be insufficiently sanitized between uses.
Published: 16:24 GMT, 19 May 2014 | Updated: 19:02 GMT, 19 May 2014 Tens of thousands of dead fish floated into a southern California harbor this weekend because the water was depleted of oxygen, experts believe. Anchovies, sting rays and other dead marine life numbering as many as 70,000 blanketed the surface of Marina Del Rey Saturday afternoon.
