REYKJAVIK, Iceland Researchers in Iceland are blaming low oxygen levels in a shallow fjord for the deaths of tens of thousands of tons of herring. Herring worth billions in exports are seen floating dead Tuesday Feb. 5 2013 in Kolgrafafjordur, a small fjord on the northern part of Snaefellsnes peninsula, west Iceland, for the second time in two months. Between 25,000 and 30,000 tons of fish died in December and more now, due to lack of oxygen in the fjord thought to have been caused by a landfill and bridge constructed across the fjord in December 2004. www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/02/06/3836701/iceland-investigating-mass-herring.html

Pilot badger culls set to go ahead -- Wednesday 27 February 2013 12.29 GMT Two pilot badger culls will go ahead this summer, in Gloucestershire and Somerset, the environment secretary Owen Patterson has announced. A third area in Dorset is also being prepared for a possible cull, should there be problems with either of the first two. Farmers conducting the cull will have to agree to kill at least 70% of the badger population in the affected areas. www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2013/feb/27/pilot-badger-culls

Thousands of dead fish wash up on Alberta beach July 22, 2012 EDMONTON - Beach-front property owners on Pigeon Lake were shocked Sunday morning to see "thousands" of dead fish wash up on the sand along Ma-Me-O Beach. Seagulls were feasting on the piles of dead walleye along the beach as community members led a self-started clean-up operation on the lake 109 kilometres southwest of Edmonton. Ma-Me-O Beach gets its name from the Cree words for a "place of many shore birds." cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2012/07/22/20015751.html

Dead manatee in Marco waters adds to record year for red tide-caused deaths Posted March 15, 2013 at 6 a.m. NAPLES — When a young manatee washed up on a Marco Island beach this week, it was the latest victim of the devastating effects of red tide hitting Southwest Florida waters. Two days earlier, four hefty carcasses were found in Lee County, victims of the red tide bloom that arrived in September. The deadly algae has killed 184 manatees this year, including four in Collier County, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials. www.naplesnews.com/news/2013/mar/15/dead-manatee-water-red-tide-florida-record-year/

US Atlantic puffin population in peril as fish stocks shift, ocean waters heat up The Associated Press June 3, 2013 PORTLAND, Maine - The Atlantic puffin population is at risk in the United States, and there are signs the seabirds are in distress in other parts of the world. In the Gulf of Maine, the comical-looking seabirds have been dying of starvation and losing body weight, possibly because of shifting fish populations as ocean temperatures rise, according to scientists. The survival rates of fledglings on Maine's two largest puffin colonies plunged last summer, and puffins are in declining health at the largest puffin colony in the Gulf, on a Canadian island about 10 miles off eastern Maine. Dozens of emaciated birds were found washed ashore in Massachusetts and Bermuda this past winter, likely victims of starvation. www.montrealgazette.com/health/Atlantic+puffin+population+peril+fish+stocks+shift+ocean/8467629/story.html

The deadly algae has killed 184 manatees this year, including four in Collier County, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials. Florida's Indian River Lagoon Is A "Killing Zone" Of Mass Animal Deaths Posted: 06/20/2013 10:38 am EDT | Updated: 06/20/2013 11:39 am EDT At least 111 manatees, 300 pelicans, and 46 dolphins — emaciated to the point of skin and bones — were all found dead in America’s most biologically diverse estuary. __________________ Since Scott took office in 2009, his smaller government approach has slashed regulation and conservation programs, reports the Broward New Times. He even reportedly replaced experienced Department of Environmental Protection employees with people from polluting industries. Scott also recently put the state's water quality under the DEP as opposed to the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Fish kills on 2 P.E.I. rivers prompt investigation Fish kill reported on Trout River for third straight year CBC News Posted: Jul 29, 2013 7:09 AM AT Last Updated: Jul 29, 2013 10:37 PM AT Environmental officials are investigating why dozens of dead fish are washing up on the banks of two western P.E.I. rivers. The first dead fish began washing up on the banks of the Trout River on Friday, following heavy rains that morning. About a dozen were found that same day, but officials and volunteers with the local watershed group have since found more than 100. The nearby Mill River also experienced a fish kill, with the first dead fish reported being washed up on Monday. Officials don't know yet what caused these events, but this is the third fish kill on the Trout River in three years. The last two were caused by pesticide runoff washed into the river by heavy rain, according to the province. More than 100 dead fish have been recovered from the Trout River since Friday. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/story/2013/07/29/pei-trout-river-fish-kill-2013.html
