Hundreds of Dead Penguins Found on Shores of Brazil 21 Jul 2010
Mostly Magellan penguins--believed to have been migrating north--have been found in Brazil's Sao Paulo state. Biologists who've conducted autopsies on the birds have found that many of them had completely empty stomachs, leading experts to believe the penguins starved to death.
What Is Killing Chile's Coastal Wildlife? Thursday, June 04, 2009.
First, in late March the bodies of about 1,200 penguins were found on a remote beach in southern Chile. Next came the sardines — millions of them — washed up dead on a nearby stretch of coastline in April, causing a stench so noxious that nearby schools were closed and the army was called in to shovel piles of rotting fish off the sand. Then it was the turn of the rare Andean flamingos. Over the course of approximately three months, thousands of them abandoned their nests on a salt lake in the Atacama Desert in the far north of Chile. Their eggs failed to hatch, and all 2,000 chicks died in their shells. Finally, in late May came the pelicans — nearly 60 of them, found dead on the central Chilean coast.
US: Mysterious Disease Killed Scores of Seals in Alaska Reuters Fri, 14 Oct 2011 11:56 CDT
A mysterious disease, possibly a virus, has killed scores of ring seals along Alaska's coast, according to local and federal agencies.
The diseased seals have been beaching themselves on the Arctic coastline since July, with numbers picking up in subsequent months, biologists with the North Slope Borough Department of Wildlife Management and other agencies said on Thursday.
East Bay oyster die-off a mystery What's killing Pensacola's famed East Bay oysters? 11:00 PM, Oct. 29, 2011
Dale Rooks says his customers are "crying" for East Bay oysters.
But the large, palm-sized oysters, renowned for their sweetness, are not showing up on his Marina Oyster Barn's menu as the seasonal dish customers expect this time of the year.
"We're finding very few alive," said Pasco Gibson, a main supplier of the East Bay oysters. "This time of the year, we should be catching 500 to 1,000 pounds per boat a day. We're not even catching a hundred pounds."
Oyster season opened on Oct. 1, and oystermen were expecting great hauls. Instead, they were alarmed when they dipped their long, wooden tongs with metal jaws into beds that had been teaming with large, juicy and healthy oysters at the end of last season, on June 30, and pulled up mostly dead ones.
Sea turtle find in B.C. a first Last Updated: Nov 26, 2011 7:48 PM PT
A species of sea turtle that historically has no place in the waters of British Columbia has been found near Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island.
An olive ridley sea turtle washed up this week on Wickaninnish Beach in Pacific Rim National Park, far from the species' native waters along Mexico.
The turtle, which was found by a park visitor on Wednesday, was injured. It was limp and had a large crack in its shell. Vancouver Aquarium staff quickly retrieved the animal and brought it to Vancouver for care, but it died the next morning.
A necropsy revealed that the female turtle had died from blunt force trauma. It also had pieces of hard plastic in its stomach.

ScienceDaily (Jan. 4, 2012) — Warming in the North Atlantic over the last 32 years has significantly reduced winter sea ice cover in harp seal breeding grounds, resulting in sharply higher death rates among seal pups in recent years, according to a new Duke University-led study.
"The kind of mortality we're seeing in eastern Canada is dramatic. Entire year-classes may be disappearing from the population in low ice years -- essentially all of the pups die," said David W. Johnston, research scientist at the Duke University Marine Lab. "It calls into question the resilience of the population."
Cape Cod dolphin beachings rise to 129; more expected 17 hours ago
More strandings are expected after 129 dolphins beached themselves on Cape Cod in the last three weeks, with 92 dying in "the single largest stranding" of dolphins in the Northeast since at least 1999, the International Fund for Animal Welfare reported Monday.
On Sunday, four dolphins were stranded along Cape Cod's hook-shaped peninsula and were quickly helped back to sea. The Massachusetts peninsula sees many dolphin strandings each year, but the 129 since Jan. 12 is typically about what rescuers see over an entire year, based on records that go back to 1999, IFAW marine mammal rescue manager Katie Moore told msnbc.com.
Most of the dolphins have appeared to be in good health, adding to the mystery of why so many have come ashore. Common dolphins are known to strand in groups due to their tight social structure, but given the large numbers this year, other factors such as weather and tides are being investigated.
Mystery Grows As More Livestock Dies In Maury County Posted: Feb 23, 2012 4:05 PM MST Updated: Feb 23, 2012 5:01 PM MST
MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. -- Horses are dying and now cattle as well and detectives in Maury County have been at a loss to explain how or why it is happening.
First, seven seemingly healthy horses turned up dead last week at a Hampshire farm in Maury County. The state performed a necropsy and released the results.
"They ruled that it's undetermined. The cause of death cannot be determined at this time. It is a mystery. We don't know what happened," said Detective Terry Chandler with the Maury County Sheriff's Department.

09/05/2011 13:10 CHINA Millions of dead fish in river water authority claims "is normal" In the Min River, the main river of Fujian, in the space of a few days tens of millions of fish have died. People block roads to protest against authorities indifference. Gutian County produces over 100 tons of fish a day, now its economy is destroyed.
Beijing (AsiaNews / Agencies) - More than a thousand people blocked the main road in Gutian county, Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian to protest the death of millions of tons of fish in the river Min, caused by the discharge of chemical waste. On the night of Sept. 3, clashes broke out when the police intervened to disperse the protest. The Centre for Human Rights and Democracy reports however, that the roadblock continued at least until the morning of September 4.
The fish die-off began on August 31 between the city of Huangtian and Shuikou and continued, culminating on September 2 when the Min River was covered in waves of dead fish (see photo). The Xinhua state news agency speaks of more than 8 thousand cases of dead fish in Shuikou and a further 1,000 in Huangtian, but China National Radio speaks of "tens of millions of dead fish", with serious damage to the economy of the area, home to many fish farms. Gutian County, about 100 km from Fuzhou, is renowned as the largest producer of carp and provides every day over 125 tons to fish markets.

The body of the southern resident orca — an endangered species in the United States — was discovered on Long Beach in Washington state in February, just days after HMCS Ottawa conducted sonar training exercises in the waters off Victoria, B.C.
