Oil Spill Hits Popular Thailand Vacation Island | Jul 30, 2013 11:40 AM ET In this photo, a 'bucket brigade' of workers removes oil from Ao Prao beach on Koh Samet island. Thai navy personnel battled on Monday to clean up a major oil slick which coated a beach on a popular tourist island in a national park after a pipeline leak. Roughly 50,000 liters of crude oil gushed into the sea on Saturday about 20 kilometers (12 miles) off the coast of the eastern province of Rayong, operator PTT Global Chemical said. news.discovery.com/earth/oceans/oil-spill-hits-thailand-tourist-island-130730.htmWhat A Year: 45 Fossil Fuel Disasters The Industry Doesn’t Want You To Know About thinkprogress.org/climate/2013/12/17/3056321/year-fossil-fuel-disasters/July 27, 2013, about 50 tons of crude oil - Rayong province, eastern Thailand

Petrotrin silent about oil spill for 4 days Apr 5, 2014 at 11:37 PM ECT On a fateful December day when Christmas shopping occupied the minds of most people, a 16-inch diameter sea line broke at the state-owned refinery, sending a rush of black fuel oil into the Gulf of Paria and along the south western coastline. The effect of that spill is still being felt today by fisherfolk and people in poor coastal communities. The Sunday Express takes a close look at the chain of events that led to this country’s worst environmental disaster in history. For four days, the State oil and gas company, Petrotrin stayed quiet about a rupture on its No 10 sea line. No alarms were raised. No formal public alert was made. No news release issued that a Petrotrin sea line carrying a “high-risk” integrity rating had ruptured and spilled 7,453 barrels of fuel oil into the sea. And even then, against a widening backdrop of damaged coastline and wetland as far as 27 kilometres away, Petrotrin was quick to rule out any connection to the blackened stretch of La Brea shoreline or the communities that were falling ill. It used preliminary tests of oil samples taken from the La Brea spill as evidence that this was not their oil. The test results it held out to the national community as proof were all conducted in the company’s state of the art laboratory at Pointe-a-Pierre. more: www.trinidadexpress.com/news/Petrotrin-silent-about-oil-spill-for-4-days-254061451.htmlwww.rigzone.com/news/image_detail.asp?img_id=168

OilOil sludge threatens Indian farms | Date 09.04.2014 An underground crude oil pipeline ruptured in this spot about one year ago, explains local farmer Dhanabalan, as he points to the earth beneath his feet. With him is Amit Tiwari, a doctoral student studying oil spills who has come to collect samples. "It's not petrol, it's diesel, crude oil," says Tiwari. "You can see the patches of dark black color in soil." In amongst the rice fields, there are small, fenced-off sections of land with oil well pipes jutting out. India is a fast growing economy, but nearly all the oil it needs is imported. A push to exploit resources locally has seen drilling operations pop up in this delta zone, where the Cauvery River meets the sea. more: www.dw.de/oil-sludge-threatens-indian-farms/a-17548326DisastersExxon Valdez oil spill: A long, painful recovery | Date 24.03.2014 Twenty-five years ago, the Exxon Valdez supertanker ran aground. More than 40 million liters of crude oil spilled into the ocean, polluting the coast. The consequences are still being felt today. www.dw.de/exxon-valdez-oil-spill-a-long-painful-recovery/a-17515818

Associated Press Published: April 24, 2014, 9:29 pm Updated: 1 day ago BISMARCK, N.D. — North Dakota confirmed Thursday the discovery of a new radioactive dump of waste from oil drilling, and separately a company hired to clean up waste found in February at another location said it removed double the amount of radioactive material originally estimated to be there. Secure Energy Services, the Canadian company hired to clean up the largest dump found so far, located at an abandoned gas station in Noonan, also said that it suspects the soil at the site is contaminated and that samples were being analyzed. The twin disclosures highlight a growing problem from North Dakota’s booming oil development — illegal disposal of oil filter socks, which are tubular nets that strain liquids during the oil production process and contain low amounts of radioactive material. Health officials have said that radioactive filter socks increasingly are being found along roadsides, in abandoned buildings or in commercial trash bins — sometimes those of competing oil companies. o.canada.com/news/north-dakota-finds-new-radioactive-oil-waste-dump-company-removes-material-from-another-site
