Nestucca Barge Oil Spill LocationThe collision occurred approximately 3 kilometres off the coast of Washington, near Gray’s Harbor. Oil came ashore in discontinuous patches mainly in Canada on Vancouver Island - from near Victoria in the southeast to near Cape Scott in the north. Time and Date of IncidentDecember 23, 1988 in the early morning. Cause of SpillThe tug Ocean Services rammed and holed its tow — the tanker barge Nestucca — off Gray's Harbour, Washington. Environmental Setting and ImpactsThe prevailing winter winds drifted the spilled oil along the scenic west coast of Vancouver Island in BC. Numerous beaches were oiled and many sensitive shoreline ecosystems suffered damage. Reports indicated that as many as 56,000 seabirds were killed. Many crab and shellfish populations were oiled in addition to herring spawning areas. Traditional native fishing practices were affected due to the contamination of the shoreline. 3 days ago Barges stuck as oil spill jams Mississippi River A plan to pump oil from a leaking barge onto another barge — a process known as lightering — had been approved, but it was unclear how long that would take, Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Jonathan Lally said Tuesday. He said the other barge was en route. Severe weather that was expected to sweep through the area could shut down cleanup operations for a time, prolonging the process further, authorities said. Crews have been working around the clock to contain and remove oil since the barge, owned by Corpus Christi, Texas-based Third Coast Towing LLC, struck a railroad bridge and began leaking early Sunday. The company has refused to comment on the incident. usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/01/30/16768492-barges-stuck-as-oil-spill-jams-mississippi-river

Minor oil spills are often bigger than reported Remote imaging finds official number of Gulf of Mexico slicks is correct, but size not always is. 28 January 2013 Some minor petroleum leaks may be not so minor after all, a study of the Gulf of Mexico reveals. By analysing satellite images, oceanographers have found that small oil spills in the heavily drilled northern Gulf of Mexico are often much larger than reported. The researchers presented their results last week at the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill and Ecosystem Science Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. Small oil spills — ranging from oil-drilling mishaps to ships discharging fuel — occur with surprising regularity, and tend to escape the public's attention that follows big spills. When someone spills petroleum or derived products in US waters, the accident must be reported to the US Coast Guard’s National Response Center in Washington DC. Those who report such spills are required to provide their own estimates of the area affected. www.nature.com/news/minor-oil-spills-are-often-bigger-than-reported-1.12307

At the previous hearings, Enbridge stunned everyone by saying "the scientific literature is clear" that species "inevitably recover" following an oil spill. And that oil spills "could generate economic spin-offs." COREXIT NALCO (Prince George Citizen, Feb. 27) FAVORITE STOCK!
Yes, you heard that right. Birds and other wildlife that get covered in oil will "inevitably recover." And oil spills are good for our economy. According to Enbridge... PRIVATE SECURITY FIRMS, AVIATION COMMERCIAL SPILL DUSTERS, HAZMAT SUPPLIES, PHARMACEUTICAL REMEDIATIONS
Our lawyers (representing Nature Canada and BC Nature pro bono) forced them to concede that none of their "scientific literature" about recovery involved marine mammals and only one considered birds. And that this "research" only looked at summer and winter, not the time when most wildlife, especially birds, are migrating, which is fall and spring.
Nature Canada has gathered and is presenting the realistic picture about oil spills.
The reality is that an oil spill would devastate marine wildlife and birds. There are 29 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) that would be impacted. The reality is that there would be a tanker larger than the Empire State Building sharing the waters with whales and birds every other day. The reality is that Enbridge's "scientific literature" is limited and biased. WINNING!

Willard Bay fuel spill increases in size Posted on: 8:58 pm, March 25, 2013, by Ben Winslow, updated on: 08:20am, March 26, 2013 WILLARD BAY — The amount of diesel fuel pumped into the wetlands near the Great Salt Lake from a broken pipeline has increased. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality said Monday that the amount of fuel could be close to 27,500 gallons. An order handed down by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has shut down Chevron’s fuel line that stretches from Salt Lake City to Boise, Idaho until further notice. The 8-inch steel pipe broke on March 18, spilling diesel fuel into the wetlands near Willard Bay. A beaver dam helped prevent the fuel from reaching the freshwater reservoir, but three beavers were contaminated. more: fox13now.com/2013/03/25/willard-bay-fuel-spill-skyrockets-in-size/

Exxon Oil Spill In Arkansas Has Left Crude Lining The Streets Michael Kelley | Apr. 1, 2013, 9:18 AM A small central Arkansas town is reeling after what the EPA called a "major oil spill" led to thousands of barrels of heavy Canadian crude oil being dumped in a residential neighborhood. On Friday afternoon officials discovered that a pipe in Exxon's Pegasus pipeline had burst in a subdivision in the town of Mayflower, forcing 22 homes to be evacuated. "Well we could see oil running down the road like a river," Joe Bradley, a Mayflower resident ordered to evacuate, told 10 News. Officials don't know when those residents be able to return. An NBC affiliate station reported that part of the pipeline runs through a water source (Lake Maumelle) that provides drinking water to nearly 400,000 residents in central Arkansas. Utah governor says Chevron leak is unacceptable — Mar. 28 8:13 PM EDT SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A series of spills from ruptured pipelines operated by Chevron Corp. has Utah's governor calling for more oversight. Gov. Gary Herbert left no doubt about his displeasure Thursday when asked about the latest spill at a monthly televised news conference. He said the federal agency responsible for interstate pipelines isn't doing its job and that Utah will step up its own efforts to ensure pipeline safety. The pipeline ruptured last week at Willard Bay State Park, spilling diesel fuel into marshes. It was Chevron's third pipeline leak in Utah in the last three years. Another pipeline leak sent crude oil rushing down into a Salt Lake City creek in 2010. Months later, the same pipeline ruptured again. Each pipeline leak involved a spill of 21,000 or more gallons of crude oil or fuel. more: bigstory.ap.org/article/utah-governor-says-chevron-leak-unacceptableI mean, an oil pipe passing right next to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and Willard Bay State Park – how are they even allowed to do this? It’s easy to understand when you consider the net income that Chevron had in the fourth quarter of 2012 alone – which is $7.2 billion. www.zmescience.com/ecology/oil-spill-chevron-utah-26032013/

Third major oil spill in a week: Shell pipeline breaks in Texas Posted on 5 Apr 2013 by Editors Thousands of gallons of oil have spilled from a pipeline in Texas, the third accident of its kind in only a week. Shell Pipeline, a unit of Royal Dutch Shell Plc, shut down their West Columbia, Texas, pipeline last Friday after electronic calculations conducted by the US National Response Center showed that upwards of 700 barrels had been lost, amounting to almost 30,000 gallons of crude oil. By Monday, Shell spokespeople said inspectors found “no evidence” of an oil leak, but days later it was revealed that a breach did occur. Representatives with the US Coast Guard confirmed to Dow Jones on Thursday that roughly 50 barrels of oil spilled from a pipe near Houston, Texas and entered a waterway that connects to the Gulf of Mexico. pipelineobserver.ca/third-major-oil-spill-in-a-week-shell-pipeline-breaks-in-texas/
