Flaxseed Might Protect Against Death from Radiation 12 August 2011 Time: 12:01 PM ET Flaxseed may protect against the damaging effects of radiation, whether from a terrorist's dirty bomb or a routine cancer treatment, a new study in mice suggests. Mice that ate flaxseed either before or up to six weeks after receiving a large radiation dose to the chest were more likely to survive and had fewer lung problems than mice not given flaxseed. Four months after receiving radiation, up to 88 percent of mice that ate flaxseed were still alive, compared with just 40 percent of mice who did not eat flaxseed. www.livescience.com/15539-flaxseed-radiation-protection.html

St. Louis raining Fukushima hot particles: Radiation 178 times normal (video) August 21, 2011 At approximately 10:20 a.m. Saturday, August 20, in St. Louis Missouri, the reading from a citizen reporter in a vehicle driven approximately four miles through the trailing edges of a thunderstorm returned a reading of 1.786 mR/hr, equating to 178 times greater than normal background radiation. (See embedded Youtube on this page left.) "This reading is almost three times greater than are previous high reading of 62x background radiation," stated the reporter who is posting radiation readings on potrblog.com ("Pissin' On The Roses"). Friday, Director of the Reactor Oversight Project at Beyond Nuclear, the regulatory watchdog over the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and nuclear power industry, Paul Gunter stated that, due to the media blackout of Fukushima and its fallout in the United States, "We're really dependent on indymedia these days." Naming shows like Russia Today, blogs and Youtube, Gunter said, "These are where news on Fukushima breaks first." Nelle's Fukushima Meltdown Update: September 8, 2011 Japan Update: Sept. 8, 2011 This is the first update in over ten days. In that time, I have collected 30 pages of stories on Fukushima (and related topics). The new format with new headings will, I hope, make it easier for readers for follow the main topic streams from many different sources. • TEPCO hopes to begin removing melted fuel in 10 years, according to its earlier estimate based on the Three Mile Island accident in the United States in 1979. It will take several decades to dismantle and relocate the reactors, according to the estimate. www.pacificfreepress.com/news/1/9663-nelles-fukushima-meltdown-update-september-8-2011.html

Japan's nuclear crisis The Lancet Oncology, Volume 12, Issue 8, Pages 724 - 725, August 2011 More children are likely to be evacuated from Fukushima Prefecture and live away from their parents or fathers, which could cause them psychological distress. To make matters worse, they might be faced with another hardship. An education board in Chiba Prefecture, which is located next to Tokyo, said that a child evacuee from an area near the troubled nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture was bullied by other children, who taunted him, saying that he could infect others with radiation.7 www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/article/PIIS1470-2045%2811%2970207-8/fulltext

TEPCO media strategy questioned Wednesday, October 5, 2011 08:21:00 TONY EASTLEY: To Japan, and more revelations have emerged about the machinations of TEPCO, the giant company that operates the Fukushima nuclear power plant. It splashed $350 million a year on advertising and took journalists on junkets just to promote its products. AM has spoken to Japanese politicians and journalists who describe how TEPCO used its wealth to strangle any opposition to the company. www.abc.net.au/am/content/2011/s3332347.htm

Asbestos: At least 12 contractors at Surry nuclear power station exposed Dominion Virginia Power says workers not at risk, doctor disagrees, state investigates 10:21 a.m. EDT, October 24, 2011 Hundreds of contract employees arrived at Surry nuclear power plant in April to repair the aging facility. Before work started, one of them told the Daily Press, safety officials said the jobs did not involve asbestos and any pipes containing asbestos would be clearly labeled. They were wrong. Flakes of the carcinogen went airborne after contractors cut a pipe, according to State Department of Labor and Industry reports obtained by the Daily Press under the Freedom of Information Act. Asbestos was later found on the clothes of a dozen workers and in three work trailers, the reports say. www.dailypress.com/news/science/dead-rise-blog/dp-asbestos-at-least-12-contractors-at-surry-nuclear-power-station-exposed-20111024,0,305076.story

November 14th, 2011 New study maps spread of Fukushima falloutIt is likely that radioactive cesium from the disaster at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant spread across much of northern and eastern Japan and could damage agriculture in several provinces, according to estimates released Monday. The study by researchers based in the United States, Japan and Norway is the first Japan-wide estimate of the spread of contamination from the Fukushima Daiichi meltdowns, said Teppei Yasunari, its lead author. Yasunari and his colleagues combined observations reported by Japanese government agencies with computer simulations on how cesium-137 particles would have been carried through the atmosphere. The study tracked data from March 20, eight days after the first hydrogen explosion at the tsunami-damaged plant, to April 19. The map is in the study. lightyears.blogs.cnn.com/2011/11/14/new-study-maps-spread-of-fukushima-fallout/Robot suit to help in Fukushima clean-up - 12:06PM GMT 08 Nov 2011 Workers at the plant have found it difficult to operate for long periods of time while wearing full protective equipment, particularly in the heat of the summer months. www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/8876233/Robot-suit-to-help-in-Fukushima-clean-up.html

Gillard's uranium-to-India play is a dangerous sellout Gavin Marshall November 21, 2011 Opinion Australia risks contributing to the India-Pakistan nuclear arms race. NEXT month's ALP national conference will be asked to make a decision of global importance: whether to back Prime Minister Julia Gillard's call for Australia to export uranium to India. Australia must decide whether to stand with the vast majority of nations in supporting the principle of nuclear disarmament, or to stand with those who continue to undermine it. India is not the responsible nuclear citizen that many would have us believe. It has a long history of broken promises and reckless conduct relating to its nuclear programs. In 1974, for instance, the Nuclear Suppliers Group was set up in response to India's ''peaceful'' nuclear weapons testing at the Pokhran testing range. The enriched plutonium required for this explosion was created using a Canadian ''CIRUS'' test reactor and ''heavy water'' supplied by the US. These materials were provided on the basis of India's pledge to use the reactor for peaceful purposes only. www.smh.com.au/opinion/politics/gillards-uraniumtoindia-play-is-a-dangerous-sellout-20111120-1np95.html

Architect of Reactor 3 warns of massive hydrovolcanic explosionNovember 19th, 2011 Architect of Fukushima Daiichi Reactor 3, Uehara Haruo, the former president of Saga University had an interview on 11/17/2011. In this interview, he admitted Tepco’s explanation does not make sense, and that the China syndrome is inevitable. He stated that considering 8 months have passed since 311 without any improvement, it is inevitable that melted fuel went out of the container vessel and sank underground, which is called China syndrome. He added, if fuel has reaches a underground water vein, it will cause contamination of underground water, soil contamination and sea contamination. Moreover, if the underground water vein keeps being heated for long time, a massive hydrovolcanic explosion will be caused. He also warned radioactive debris is spreading in Pacific Ocean. Tons of the debris has reached the Marshall Islands as of 11/15/2011. fukushima-diary.com/2011/11/architect-of-reactor-3-warns-massive-hydrovolcanic-explosion/#comments
