Like Bisphenol-A (BPA), triclosan is a hormone disruptor, which could lead to problems like early onset puberty, cancer and reduced fertility.
Triclosan, which is used in thousands of consumer and personal care products, doesn't ever disappear and has been found in human urine, blood, breast milk and umbilical cord blood. Due to the serious health implications, the EPA has a legal duty to protect the public and the environment. I urge you to do so by banning this chemical.
Research has shown that triclosan poses numerous threats to human and environmental health. New and emerging science increasingly supports the immediate need for a ban on triclosan.
For example:
• Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), the American Nurses Association (ANA) and Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) jointly released a study that suggests triclosan may pose an occupational hazard to health care providers and medical professionals.
• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) discovered that triclosan concentrations in the US population increased 41% between the years 2004-2006.
• In sheep, triclosan interferes with an enzyme that helps estrogen, a hormone required for the proper brain development, cross the placenta to reach the growing baby.
• Even at low levels, triclosan can reduce photosynthesis in a type of algae, known as diatoms, that produces oxygen and food that other aquatic organisms rely on.
Because triclosan is no more effective than regular soap and water, triclosan need not be incorporated into consumer products. Given the hazards this pesticide poses to people and the environment, I urge the EPA to take immediate action to ban triclosan from all consumer products.

Hormone Hijack. It's known to interfere with thyroid function, thus marking it as a hormone disruptor. When exposed to chlorinated water, triclosan reacts to create chloroform, another possible carcinogen. Structurally, triclosan is similar to the infamous Agent Orange used during the Vietnam War.

The use of triclosan is widespread. It's most commonly in hand soaps, cleaning supplies and dish detergents, but also in products that don't claim to be antibacterial. Some toothpastes, kitchen utensils, garbage bags, toys and bedding contain triclosan. Health Canada has also registered 1,200 cosmetics with the ingredient.
