Insurance fight over cost of 37-acre sinkhole in Bayou Corne Texas Brine blames oil company for sinkhole Published: Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 6:56 p.m. Last Modified: Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 6:56 p.m. Texas Brine Co. filed a $100 million lawsuit today against Occidental Petroleum Corp., accusing it of causing a sinkhole that appeared near Bayou Corne in 2012 that forced evacuation of hundreds of residents. The lawsuit claims the company drilled for oil and gas too close to the Napoleonville Salt Dome where Texas Brine was pumping water to get brine for refineries, and that reduced pressure in the reservoir and caused the cavern to collapse. “The facts in this case show that there was a high likelihood that the improper drilling and operation of an oil and gas well targeting the Big Hum oil reservoir would damage adjacent caverns in the salt dome,” said James Garner, a partner with Sher Garner, the New Orleans law firm representing Houston-based Texas Brine. www.dailycomet.com/article/20150709/ARTICLES/150709711Trailer: ‘FORGOTTEN BAYOU: LIFE ON THE SINKHOLE’ is a documentary about the Bayou Corne Sinkhole, 32.5 acres in diameter, 180’ deep and still growing.
