State Officials Investigate Bubbling Lake Peigneur Posted: Feb 21, 2013 7:06 PM Updated: Feb 21, 2013 7:10 PM The state is taking a closer look at what residents say are bubbles in Lake Peigneur in Iberia Parish. The departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Quality took samples from Lake Peignuer today to find out what is causing the bubbles. Last night, public officials, residents and other groups spoke out against AGL Resources, which wants to expand natural gas storage below salt caverns under the lake. Residents fear it could be another disaster waiting to happen--like the current sinkhole in Assumption Parish. Residents near Lake Peigneur are already on edge since a 1980 accident involving an oil drilling rig. A miscalculation sent the rig's drill directly into the salt mine instead of under the lake. The whirlpool that was created swamped several acres of land and was strong enough to swallow barges from a nearby canal. more: www.katc.com/news/state-officials-investigate-bubbling-lake-peigneur/#_The previous accident in 1980 took in 150 acres of land.

Florida man vanishes after being sucked into sinkhole under his bedroom Posted on Friday, 03.01.13 SEFFNER -- A sheriff's deputy plucked a man from an expanding sinkhole, but neither was able to save the man's brother from being sucked into the rubble, authorities said. Early Friday, authorities said the site at 240 Faithway Drive had become too unstable to continue rescue efforts and the focus would instead shift to a recovery operation. The sinkhole opened late Thursday in the home's backyard, swallowing one of the home's four bedrooms. Read more here: www.miamiherald.com/2013/03/01/3260805/florida-man-vanishes-after-being.html

'Sinkhole season' just beginning in Florida - Mar 07 2013 01:43:31 PM EST 2nd sinkhole opens up in Seffner Across Florida this time of year, State Geologist Jonathan Arthur says it's the start of what's unofficially considered the "sinkhole season." He says it coincides with the state's rainy season and usually lasts until the end of summer. Arthur looked at 50 years of data and found that there is usually an uptick of reported sinkholes in February, with an increase until about July, when activity tapers off. Both extremely dry weather and very wet weather can trigger sinkholes. Man-made activities can also cause the earth to collapse. www.clickorlando.com/news/-Sinkhole-season-just-beginning-in-Florida/-/1637132/19199950/-/format/rss_2.0/-/h8yhc1z/-/index.html

February 22, 2013. Frustrated Assumption Parish, La., residents displaced by a massive sinkhole that has swallowed 9 acres of land near their homes are asking lawmakers to assist them, in getting buyouts of their property. March 13, 2013. In a related development Wednesday, a “spasmodic burst” of micro-earthquakes near the failed Texas Brine cavern and different types of tremors to the west of that Bayou Corne site have led to a halt in sinkhole response operations in the close vicinity of the slurry hole, parish officials said. theadvocate.com/home/5428201-125/tremors-halt-work-close-to

Bayou Sinkhole Update: Increased Seismic Activity, Access Ramp Caves In General News 3/28/2013 at 12:52:20 NAPOLEONVILLE, LA: At 12:15 pm Central time, on March 28, the Assumption Parish Police Jury announced that elevated subsurface seismic activity had been detected and the alert code status has been raised to Code 2, effectively ceasing all work in and over the sinkhole. Another area caved in on the morning of the 28th. This is the third such cave-in in just 11 days, which is a record for this site. The access ramp from the Oxy 3 well pad to the sinkhole has reportedly been lost in the cave-in, along with a number of trees adjacent to the ramp. Previous articles in this series: 11. Emergency declared, 200 foot by 200 foot "slurry" area of collapsed land discovered. 400-foot deep sinkhole in Louisiana is expanding and today swallowed the boat of two cleanup workers ...sinkhole expands to 526-feet ... hole’s width of 620 feet has not changed.. sinkhole grows to size of 'Olympic pool'.. The sinkhole is about four acres in size and has grown since it emerged on August third... gas flowiing, the sinkhole is more than 5½ acres in size Louisiana sinkhole grows to 8 acres — Witness: “Ridiculous” amount of oil outside hole ... roughly four football fields, devoured a stretch of State Highway 516 ...residents displaced by a massive sinkhole that has swallowed 9 acres of land Tremors cause work stoppage at sinkhole - April 01, 2013 BAYOU CORNE — Another round of elevated tremor levels halted work Monday at the surface of the Assumption Parish sinkhole at least until Tuesday morning, parish officials said. Seismic monitoring again detected an increase in the number of “very long period” events, parish officials said Monday. The tremors are linked to gas or fluid movement under the more than 13-acre sinkhole between the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou communities. more: theadvocate.com/news/5593346-123/tremors-cause-work-stoppage-atGood article: Louisiana Sinkhole: Answers are Forthcoming (UPDATED) Feb 10 2013 UPDATE: Upon further investigation, this tells a very sordid story of Hooker #1 Oil Well. A drama in and of itself. The well was first drilled and completed in 1986 and was a 6300 ft. borehole down to the depleted formation shown in the 2007 3-D survey. It changed hands a few times until Energy Self Service Oils, Baton Rouge, La. took it over in 2006, then sometime between then and Feb. 2009, just up and walked off. Orphaned without a word to anyone. The state had to come in and P&A the well themselves in 5/12/2010. This was an open well, a fire hazard on the surface and right next door to the Oxy #3 cavern and at the same depths, Unreal. This depletion of this formation right next door to Oxy 3 and the salt dome may have had a role to play in all of this. Just absolutely mind-blowing the level of irresponsibility, and a “I don’t give a damn,” attitude. freedomrox.wordpress.com/2013/02/10/louisiana-sinkhole-answers-are-forthcoming/
