The man behind Calgary's Troubled Bridge
Many cities have sought out Calatrava to bring an elegant modernity, such Atlanta, Milwaukee, Jerusalem and Venice, where Italian critics have said the red-steel-and-glass span is an overpriced eyesore on the romantic Grand Canal.
The City of Dallas, also went upscale with Calatrava for three "signature" traffic bridges. Officials had to order changes to the initial 2003 design three years later when inflated steel costs helped push bids for the first bridge way beyond the $69-million US budget.
The scaled-down bridge, too, has been marred by delays. After a contractor took three months extra to fabricate the ornate steel parts, the due date was pushed from May 2010 to March 2011.
