Pretty SlickA documentary feature on the year of the BP Oil Spill SynopsisFilmmaker James Fox grows frustrated by the lack of plain talk and BP's inability to plug a gushing well after its Deep Water Horizon rig exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico. During the summer of 2010, Fox moves among locals across four Gulf states documenting the largest man-made environmental disaster in U.S. history. He flies over ground zero with Marine Biologist Dr. Carl Safina who warns him that BP is sinking the oil with the chemical dispersant Corexit, sweeping it under the rug. He investigates this further and conducts his own independent water tests to determine toxicity levels. The results show that public safety takes a backseat to a tourist-based economy and the symbiosis between big oil and government becomes clear. prettyslickthemovie.com/index.html

FilmAn ill wind Silent SnowBy Jan van den Berg and Pipaluk Knudsen-Ostermann 2011, 71 min, Netherlands English subtitles For more information see www.silentsnow.org/en/homePipaluk Knudsen-Ostermann is from Greenland. That the country is at the sharp end of global warming, no-one doubts. In the year they filmed Silent Snow, Pipaluk’s hometown saw the sun emerge from its winter slumber earlier than usual: the mountains on the horizon are getting smaller, the polar caps are melting. These days, there is not enough ice to go hunting in the winter, although there is too much for fishing, at least for now. “Our country is slowly disappearing” sighs Pipaluk. But global warming is not the main focus of the slender and sombre Silent Snow, which is directed by Jan van den Berg and is currently making its way around the European film festivals. The film is subtitled “the invisible poisoning of the world”. On the film’s website, a quote from Jens C Hansen of the Centre of Arctic Medical Research says “Monitoring of human exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals has taken place since 1994. The study has confirmed that Arctic populations relying on marine food have an exposure level of POPs and methyl mercury related to the amount of traditional food eaten. There is a need for dietary advice to Arctic peoples so they can make informed choices concerning the food they eat”. www.silentsnow.org/files/thelancet.com-oncology-SilentSnow.pdf- bananas in Costa Rica - corrupt official involved with DDT, Uganda - Pakistan's cotton farmers reap health benefits from using less pesticide - Pesticides, genes combine to up risk of Parkinson's - Chemical factory in India - NEW REPORT IS FIRST TO QUANTIFY HEALTH IMPACTS FROM WORLD’S WORST TOXIC POLLUTION PROBLEMS www.silentsnow.org/en/references

New Coal Rush Film Documentary Exposes America's "Other BP" Disaster (VIDEO) Posted: 03/22/2012 4:04 pm When theatre-goers view the premiere of the stunning film documentary Coal Rush at the Atlanta Film Fest next week, the judgment on one of the best kept secrets in our nation's energy policy will be "revealed as water, and justice as a mighty torrent." Never will theatre-goers view a glass of clean water in the same way; never will coal be called "clean" again. Sitting aside one of the beautiful headwaters in the great Appalachian mountain range, framed by the deciduous forests of life, a former coal operator hauntingly confesses to the enormity of an intentional "spill" that makes the Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill look like a garden leak: "We pumped an ocean into the mountains." more: www.huffingtonpost.com/jeff-biggers/coal-rush_b_1373249.htmlCoal Rush is a documentary following the progress of a multi-million dollar case against the coal company Massey Energy, accused of covert contamination of drinking water in the Southern West Virginia coalfields. The plaintiffs, more than 500 residents of Mingo County, are plagued by widespread health problems, such as abnormal rates of cancer, liver failures, and neurological diseases. They claim that for more than 30 years they have been secretly poisoned by illegal dumping of coal slurry underground by major US coal producer Massey Energy. www.coalrushmovie.com/

BANANAS!* was the subject of a discussion between Judge Victoria Chaney and Dole attorney Andrea Neuman, and the trailer for the film was showed in the court room. In regard to the film, Judge Chaney stated to those present: “Just so we are clear, I am not in any way going to make, and I will not consider, any request for prior restraint on free speech. Okay? So, don’t ask me to go try and contact the film company. I don’t have jurisdiction over them. But even if I did, don’t ask me for it.” After the hearing, Dole’s law firm, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, sent a letter to WG Film, ITVS and all of the sponsors of the Los Angeles Film Festival. Warning: Graphic violence An Unspeakable Act Episode 1 In this powerful documentary, Will Storr examines a taboo that still reigns even in the most diabolical of conflicts. Despite existing mostly in the realm of rumour and secret, many contemporary academics believe that sexual violence is a facet of all wars. Today, rape is one of the widespread problems that faces the women of the Great Lakes region of East Africa. In the first part of this searing examination of the issue, award-winning writer and Guardian journalist Will Storr travels to the Democratic Republic of Congo to meet the women who are menaced daily by the escaped genocidaires from neighbouring Rwanda - who haunt the forested borderlands - and by their own army. In the beautiful and savagely violent Lake Kivu region - the so called 'rape capital of the world' - Will bears witness to their unforgettable personal testimonies and learns about the effects it has on victims and their families. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00vp5pk

Post by Lai Changxing on Aug 4, 2012 18:14:55 GMT -8
Inside the Red Mansion 15:03 - 5 years ago This is a short film about China's most wanted man. Lai Changxing is an illiterate peasant who cheated the Chinese government out of $3.6 billion. His story is told by Oliver August, the author of "Inside the Red Mansion," a book on the seven-year search for Mr Lai. THE BOOK: A suspenseful and slyly irreverent journey into the heart of the new China by the Beijing bureau chief of The Times of London - to be published in June 2007. Due to a mix-up, Oliver August stumbles on to the hunt for China’s most wanted man. Lai Changxing is an illiterate tycoon and on the run from corruption charges. Sensing something emblematic in his outsized tale of rise and fall, August tries to find the self-made billionaire and understand how he reinvented himself. Lai embodies the story of China's recent success, as well as its Achilles heel. The blending of its command economy with the free market is riddled with corruption. Moving ever closer to the elusive tycoon, August's introduces us to a people in the midst of head-spinning self-transformation. We meet a nightclub hostess and her gaggle of "Miss Temporarys"; powerful businessmen on a debt settling round of nocturnal golf; and a foie gras king who markets his goose liver by the ton and prefers it deep fried. This is a China seething with desire, engaged in a slap-stick fight with its past, and hell bent on the future. "Inside the Red Mansion" is the first book to capture the giddy vibe of contemporary China and its darker vulnerabilities. video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4532856359311820070&q=inside+the+red+mansion&hl=en
