DR. - Congo mass rapes 'defy belief': UN Sat Sep 25, 6:57 AM GENEVA (AFP) - Three groups of armed militia raped at least 303 civilians in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo over four days, said a UN initial report on the atrocities whose "scale and viciousness... defy belief." "At least 303 civilians were raped, in many cases multiple times," said a statement issued by the UN Joint Human Rights Office in the country in a preliminary report outlining the violations which took place between July 30 and August 2. "The known victims include 235 women, 52 girls, 13 men and three boys," detailed the probe, following the team's visit to 13 affected villages in the Walikale region in Nord-Kivu province. "In addition, at least 923 houses and 42 shops were looted and 116 people were abducted in order to carry out forced labour," it said. Rupert Colville, spokesman for the office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, warned that the figures could still rise. ca.news.yahoo.com/s/afp/100925/world/drcongo_unrest_rape_un

Sterilizing Women in Muslim Uzbekistan - Posted April 12, 2012 TASHKENT – Uzbekistan’s government is reportedly running a secret program to sterilize women without their knowledge in an effort to control the growing population in the Muslim-majority country. “Every year we are presented with a plan,” a gynecologist from the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, told the BBC News Online on Thursday, April 12... "Rules on Caesareans used to be very strict, but now I believe 80% of women give birth through C-sections,” said a chief surgeon at a hospital near the capital. “This makes it very easy to perform a sterilization and tie the fallopian tubes.” www.sodahead.com/united-states/uzbekistan-has-been-sterilizing-its-woman-without-them-knowing-it-how-many-more-countries-are-do-it/question-2584471/

Dying of shame 30 May 2012. Just weeks after an article instigated by Christian Aid journalist Emma Pomfret in the Observer Magazine earned a prestigious One World Media award for highlighting the controversial subject of male rape, the piece also scooped the Amnesty International Media Award for Best Magazine supplement of 2011. The Rape of Men, written by Will Storr, and published in the Observer Magazine, Vanity Fair, and GQ last summer, scooped the prestigious awards after highlighting the brave and inspirational work of the Refugee Law Project, one of Christian Aid’s long-standing partners based in Kampala. Following the Ugandan government’s notorious proposal to introduce the death penalty for homosexuality, Emma discovered that the vast majority of male rape victims who had fled conflict in the DRC for a relatively safer life across the border in Uganda were then accused of being homosexual if they dared to report their ordeal to Ugandan police or doctors alike. Some men were even thrown into prison without trial or simply ‘disappeared’ when they were forced to attend hospital appointments with life-threatening injuries. www.christianaid.org.uk/whatwedo/in-focus/africa-partner-speaks-out-against-male-rape/award-winning-article-changes-un-definition-of-rape.aspx******************* US evangelical Christians accused of promoting homophobia in Africa Tuesday 24 July 2012 Christian evangelical groups in the US are attempting a "cultural colonisation" of Africa, opening offices in numerous countries to promote attacks on homosexuality and abortion, according to an investigation by a liberal thinktank. American religious organisations are expanding their operations across the continent, lobbying for conservative policies and laws and fanning homophobia, argues the Boston-based Political Research Associates (PRA). The groups include the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), founded by the televangelist Pat Robertson, which has established bases in Kenya and Zimbabwe. www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jul/24/evangelical-christians-homophobia-africa
