CO2 injections likely culprit in Texas earthquakes -study | NEW YORK Mon Nov 4, 2013 6:42pm EST www.reuters.com/article/2013/11/04/earthquake-co2-texas-idUSL2N0IP1XR20131104The paper, authored by Wei Gan of the China University of Geosciences in Beijing and Cliff Frohlich of University of Texas in Austin, was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It relied on data gathered by six temporary seismograph stations that were a part of the USArray program. Recent studies, including a 2012 paper by one of the authors, have linked fracking and wastewater disposal wells to increased seismic activity in places like the Barnett Shale in northern Texas and central Oklahoma. This is the first publication to hint at a direct link between enhanced oil recovery and seismic activity in Texas.

Shale well leaks during drilling process, forcing evacuations in Morgan County The Columbus Dispatch • Thursday May 8, 2014 6:43 AM A Morgan County shale well being drilled in preparation for fracking began leaking on Sunday, forcing the evacuation of nearby residents. State and federal environmental emergency-response teams and the drilling company finally contained the mess yesterday, but not before it reached a nearby creek. The leak was discovered on Sunday, when about 10 gallons per minute of oily drilling fluid, called mud, gushed from the drill site, according to an Ohio Environmental Protection Agency report filed on Monday. Seven residents from three houses were evacuated because of the danger that escaping natural gas might lead to an explosion. According to a U.S. EPA report, a “pocket of unexpected natural gas was encountered” during drilling. That caused overpressurization and failure of the well head. One hundred barrels of drilling mud spilled from the well on Sunday, according to the well’s owner, PDC Energy of Colorado, which said some of it reached an unnamed creek near Beverly, Ohio. An unknown amount of wet gas — a mixture containing crude oil — also escaped. As of noon on Tuesday, 330 barrels of oil and water had been collected at the site, according to the U.S. EPA. Drilling mud is used to lubricate the drill bits that cut through layers of rock in creating oil and gas wells. In this case, the drilling mud was a 75 percent synthetic oil blend. Drilling mud flooded the pad and flowed down an earthen platform into storm-water-control drainage ditches and into the creek. The drilling rig and pad were installed about a year ago on farmland owned by Orin D. Palmer, who grows corn, soybeans and hay near the site. The company said yesterday that it had drilled about 7,000 feet down and had turned its drill and gone about 1,000 feet horizontally when it struck the gas. more: www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2014/05/07/Morgan-County-fracking-well-leaking-since-Sunday.html

State Legislature Wants to Make Telling the Truth About Fracking a Felony May 18, 2014 12:31 pm By Staff On Thursday May 15, SB 786 was filed with the principle clerk. It is called the “Energy Modernization Act” in an attempt to message the content and politically separate the reality of the legislation from the true result. One thing that the legislation would do is make it a Class I felony to disclose the poisonous chemicals that petrochemical companies want to pump into North Carolina’s soil. The new rules also seek to force first responders to sign confidentially agreements in order to receive information about the poisons used following any accident. Both medical providers and fire chiefs would also be bound not to disclose what is being pumped into our ground and ground water. Following the change in rules for the state legislative building, this is simply another attempt to criminalize behavior that cramps the style of the Republican Super-majority. rep. thom tillis From voter suppression laws to their hard treatment of the unemployed, the North Carolina state legislature, led by Sen. Phil Berger and Rep. Thom Tillis, have never shied away from being the most extreme corporate advocates in America. read more: www.camelcitydispatch.com/state-legislature-wants-to-make-telling-the-truth-about-fracking-a-felony-530/

California Halts Injection of Fracking Waste, Warning it May Be Contaminating Aquifers State’s drought has forced farmers to rely on groundwater, even as California aquifers have been intentionally polluted due to exemptions for oil industry. ProPublica, July 18, 2014, 11:50 a.m. California officials have ordered an emergency shut-down of 11 oil and gas waste injection sites and a review more than 100 others in the state's drought-wracked Central Valley out of fear that companies may have been pumping fracking fluids and other toxic waste into drinking water aquifers there. www.propublica.org/article/ca-halts-injection-fracking-waste-warning-may-be-contaminating-aquifers

How Alberta Will Fight Fracking Folk Hero Jessica Ernst | 16 Jan 2013 In famous flaming water case, regulator to argue 'no duty of care' to landowners or groundwater. In a landmark case that has attracted global attention, Jessica Ernst, a 55-year-old scientist and oil patch consultant is suing the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB), the Alberta Environment and Encana for contaminating her water well with methane and other chemicals nearly a decade ago. Alberta's main oil and gas regulator will argue in an Alberta court this Friday that it owes "no duty of care" to protect groundwater from hydraulic fracturing and that a regulator can violate the basic rights of citizens if it regards them as an "eco-terrorist." ** Encana, whose CEO Randy Eresman abruptly resigned last week, is no stranger to controversy. The company, which is struggling with debt and an over-reliance on controversial shale gas production, remains the subject of a major U.S. government groundwater study in Pavillion, Wyoming, that has linked hydraulic fracturing to aquifer contamination. ** Michigan authorities are also investigating the company for allegedly colluding with Chesapeake Energy to keep land prices low. Encana, the target of a mysterious bombing campaign in northern B.C. in 2008, also received record fines from Colorado's Oil and Gas Commission for contaminating water in 2004. thetyee.ca/News/2013/01/16/Ernst-Frack-Update/Paul Ryan conflicts of interest: Chesapeake Energy. bdgrdemocracy.wordpress.com/2012/07/06/paul-ryan-fracking-baron-with-clear-conflicts-of-interest/Alberta woman loses fracking case appeal, wants to take case to Supreme Court | By The Canadian Press, September 15, 2014 Last fall an Alberta Court of Queen's Bench judge ruled that Ernst can't sue the energy regulator because it is immune from private legal claims. The Alberta Court of Appeal has upheld that ruling. www.edmontonjournal.com/touch/business/Alberta+woman+loses+fracking+case+appeal+wants+take+case/10205540/story.html

Ann Craft's Fracking Nightmare: A Top Lawyer's Startling Counsel Albertan's son, seeking legal help, records an insider's blunt advice on how petro giants and regulators fend off lawsuits. In 2012, a seismic-like event lifted up the deck of his mother's mobile home in central Alberta. It damaged her property and even changed the topography of her land. Both O'Neil and Craft suspect that the shallow gas drilling and fracking program for four nearby coal seam wells by Houston-based Quicksilver Resources at the time probably accounted for the seismic event. Quicksilver denies any role. Then things got worse. Months later, a trucking company delivered a batch of contaminated water containing sour crude oil to Craft's cistern. Craft showered in the toxic water and has suffered ill health and repeated trips to doctors ever since. Alberta Environment initially promised a hydrogeological study of Craft's property but then changed its mind. 5 Dec 2014, TheTyee.ca thetyee.ca/News/2014/12/05/Ann-Craft-Fracking-Nightmare/"Encana has said, look, you know, we're happy to pay for this, without admitting or denying liability, ... We just don't care. You know, it's, this is a rounding error on our balance sheet, for God's sakes. Would you stop being a nuisance. Encana, ERCB, and Alberta Environment just don't care about that either. They just don't care about bad publicity because what tends to happen is that the people who go yapping to the media are typically seen as nutcases. Another Quicksilver case in Wetaskiwin. "But, again, most of these cases resolve. Okay, we damaged your water well. We'll just set you up with potable water through a tank system forever, because, you know, we just spent a million dollars drilling this well that we made 100 million on. And it's costing us an extra $300,000." Fracking Blowout in Texas Causes Huge Dead Zone (PHOTOS) www.huffingtonpost.com/jesse-coleman/fracking-blowout-in-texas_b_7561868.htmlPosted: 06/11/2015 11:51 am EDT Updated: 06/11/2015 1:59 pm EDT A dead zone is visible on June 1, 2015 around an EnCana frackng well blowout that occurred May 19, 2015 in a rural area near Karnes City, Texas. The well, one of two that blew out that week, exploded outside of Karnes City in the Eagle Ford shale, The same week that Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill stripping local communities of their ability to control the oil and gas industry, a fracking well exploded in south Texas, spraying a toxic mix of chemicals and forcing the evacuation of 20 families. EnCana, the company responsible for the blowout, has barred impacted residents from returning to their homes, pets, and possessions for more than three weeks. Some may never return to their homes, as full decontamination is impossible. In Texas, a fracking well can be as close as 300 feet from a home. The impacts, from air pollution, to noise, to major well blowouts, caused the Texas city of Denton to pass a regulation that kept fracking out of the city limits. The Denton resolution was voted on in a local ballot measure, and reflected the democratic will of the citizens of Denton. The shale and fracking industry, which spent large sums to defeat the Denton bill, immediately counter-attacked with lawsuits. The Texas state legislature also floated a bill that would strip Denton and all local governments of the right to regulate the oil and gas industry. The same week that saw the massive blowout in Denton, Texas Governor Gregg Abbott signed the bill into law.

In Fox Creek, Alberta, where industry triggered (29 Jan 2015, thetyee.ca/News/2015/01/29/Alberta-Fracking-Earthquake/) a 4.4 magnitude earthquake, a company fracking in the Duvernay Formation has reported more tremors. "On May 28, an operator in the Fox Creek area reported two seismic events, of a magnitude 2.2 and 2.1 respectively," confirmed Ryan Bartlett, a spokesperson for the Alberta Energy Regulator. "The events were associated with hydraulic fracturing operations," said Bartlett, "and were reported to the [regulator] as required by Subsurface Order #2," a new set of regulations to monitor seismicity set up last February. In addition, a shallow 3.5 magnitude earthquake occurred near Rocky Mountain House in central Alberta where a history of quick and high-volume gas extraction from the Strachan gas pool has triggered swarms of tremors since 1976. Another 4.4 Magnitude Industry Reported Quake in Alberta, 16 Jun 2015 thetyee.ca/News/2015/06/16/Another-Industry-Earthquake/Oklahoma earthquakes linked to oil and gas drilling, study shows 5 hours ago "What we've learned in this study is that the fluid injection responsible for most of the recent quakes in Oklahoma is due to production and subsequent injection of massive amounts of wastewater, and is unrelated to hydraulic fracturing," said Zoback, the Benjamin M. Page Professor in the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences. Read more at: phys.org/news/2015-06-oklahoma-earthquakes-linked-oil-gas.html#jCp
