Walrii Other majors accused of ‘walrus’ oil spill plans June 15, 2010 3:46pm Remember how BP’s Gulf of Mexico spill response plan talked about the protection of walruses, sea otters and other animals not found in the region? And how the plan listed a deceased expert? Ed Markey, chair of the House Energy and Commerce’s subcommittee on Energy and the Environment, says BP is not the only one with a duff plan; in fact the four other oil and gas majors appearing at the subcomittee’s hearings today all have similar flaws, he says. blogs.ft.com/energy-source/2010/06/15/other-majors-accused-of-walrus-oil-spill-plans/

BP downplayed oil-rig disaster risk 'No adverse impacts are expected,' platform operator said in 2009 filing Last Updated: Saturday, May 1, 2010 | 12:21 AM ET The petroleum giant operating the Gulf of Mexico oil rig that exploded last week, causing millions of litres of oil to spew into the sea, de-emphasized the risk of a catastrophe in paperwork it submitted last year to the U.S. government. British energy company BP Plc. said it was "unlikely that an accidental surface or subsurface oil spill would occur" from the well it was proposing to drill 80 kilometres off the Louisiana shore. And if such a spill did occur, the company said, "due to the distance to shore and the response capabilities that would be implemented, no significant adverse impacts are expected." The assessments are part of BP's 52-page submission, dated February 2009, seeking approval from the U.S. Minerals Management Service to begin drilling the Deepwater Horizon well. www.cbc.ca/world/story/2010/04/30/louisiana-oil-spill.html

Markey Kicks BP's Ass, Obama Scores 6/15/2010 02:34:00 PM Riveting at first with BP America's Chairman looking stone-cold sober and ready to be lead to the gallows for about the first hour of opening remarks. Markey as Chairman sliced and diced first, kicking some BP walruses clean out of the Gulf as well as walruses found in 3 other Spill Response Plans just like BP's, all 4 with the same 500 page format and 90% identical even Shell's, all 5 with about the same cover art, but at least Shell with some background in fossils and maybe fossil fuels knew that there haven't been walruses in the Gulf for 3 million years, as Markey lectured the other Chairmen of Big Oil. newshammer.blogspot.com/2010/06/markey-kicks-bps-ass-obama-scores.html

- Minerals Management Service, the scandal-ridden federal agency that for years had essentially allowed the oil industry to self-regulate - In April 2007, an environmental assessment covering the area where BP would drill concluded that blowouts were "low probability and low risk," even though a test funded by MMS had found that blowout preventers failed 28 percent of the time. - "Walruses" and other cold-water mammals, including sea otters and sea lions. The mistake appears to be the result of a sloppy cut-and-paste job from BP's drilling plans for the Arctic. Even worse: Among the "primary equipment providers" for "rapid deployment of spill response resources," BP inexplicably provides the Web address of a Japanese home-shopping network - Most troubling of all, the government has allowed BP to continue deep-sea production at its Atlantis rig – one of the world's largest oil platforms. (June 8, 2010) www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-spill-the-scandal-and-the-president-20100608?page=3New Concerns Over BP Atlantis Gulf Oil Rig — Houston, TX — The controversy over the BP Atlantis deepwater oil production facility deepened last Friday, as a newly released U.S. Department of Interior Inspector-General report reveals that engineers involved in an investigation of the facility’s safety rebuked the findings that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) sent to Congress in March of 2011.
