Weird. Connecting the dots in the Bruce Carson controversy Global News: Wednesday, April 6, 2011 6:03 PM At a press conference in Markham, ON Prime Minister Stephen Harper deflected questions about his former advisor, reiterating that he was unaware of Carson’s background during his security clearance process. .... Reports surfaced that embattled RCMP Commissioner William Elliott approved Carson’s security clearance. Elliott was the national security adviser in the Privy Council Office at the time of Carson’s clearance, and was appointed as head of the RCMP by Stephen Harper in July 2007. On Tuesday a senior intelligence source, who spoke to media on the condition of anonymity, refuted the reports that Elliott was involved in Carson’s security clearance. The anonymous source said that the national security adviser rarely plays a role in security screening. www.globaltvedmonton.com/Connecting+dots+Bruce+Carson+controversy/4571379/story.html

Maybe Mr. Whatshisname can read from this report, during the televised debates this week, if it's on hand. Tories kept ‘scandalous’ G8 and G20 spending a secret: Ignatieff Published On Tue Apr 05 2011 The auditor general is normally required to first table her reports in the House of Commons. And because the Commons is no longer in session – due to an election forced by the opposition parties – her report could be delayed until Parliament returns. But Ignatieff claimed that the Conservatives have already received advance copies of Fraser’s probe and he called on Harper to make those findings public. www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/969164--tories-kept-scandalous-g8-and-g20-spending-a-secret-ignatieff?bn=1It would be nice to know, before an election. It's only fair.

And what about the secret letter about the kazillion jets? [untendered] Federal Election: Layton in Saskatoon, Ignatieff in GTA Harper is taking a day-off News1130 Staff Apr 09, 2011 16:06:50 PM Harper maintains Canada will be exempted from staggering development cost increases associated with the ultra-high-tech jets. Speaking in Toronto, Ignatieff says Harper saying he has it in writing sounds like something from a Dan Brown novel. "He's got some secret letter about the planes. It's like the Da Vinci Code," he says. "It unlocks all the secrets, you know, all mysteries are answered. Barak Obama doesn't know what the F-35s are going to cost. How's Stephen Harper supposed to know? www.news1130.com/news/local/article/210110--federal-election-layton-in-saskatoon-ignatieff-in-gtaMaybe Mr Whathisname has an inside track with the US Department of Defense, a special deal? Lockheed Martin was having some troubles, as I recall, then this super sale with a super maintenance component for decades. Too bad we ratty worthless Canadians aren't good enough to know this kind of important government and budgetary information. Same for the troops, Afghanistan and the dead sled dogs prorogue 2010, when hockey ruled over parliamentary procedure - that was expensive, too. Rules only apply for losers ja.

Tories used praise for Liberals to defend summit costs: Fraser Day apologizes, says 'proper quote' will be added to Tory dissent report Last Updated: Apr 12, 2011 2:55 PM ET Canada's auditor general has rebuked the Conservatives for recycling an unrelated quote by her about a previous Liberal government's security spending in a parliamentary report on the costs of the G8/G20 summits in Ontario last summer, CBC News has learned. The Conservatives' report, presented as a dissenting opinion to the Commons the morning Parliament was dissolved last month, quotes Sheila Fraser giving high marks to the Harper government for prudent spending on the summits. www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadavotes2011/story/2011/04/11/cv-election-weston-ag-fraser.html“The comments attributed to me in the [Conservative] report are completely unrelated to G8/G20 spending,” Fraser writes in her letter.

This report was supposed to have been presented to Parliament on April 5th. Now we're having an election, and this information would be mighty handy for voters to have NOW.
What to do.
In its strange defense, the Conservative "rebuttal" quotes a 2004 report about previous Liberal government's security spending. This is very weird woo-woo shit.

2011 - $438.5m/eaF-35 price could top $28 billion March 10, 2011 Canada's planned purchase of 65 F-35 fighter jets will cost the government far more than initially thought, according to a new report from the parliamentary budget officer. The report, dubbed An Estimate of the Fiscal Impact of Canada's Proposed Acquisition of the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter, says the project will cost roughly $28.5 billion for the 65 aircraft over a 30-year period. The figure includes purchasing and maintenance costs for the aircraft. The federal government has said the jets would cost $9 billion and that maintenance costs would drive the total figure to about $16 billion over 20 years. Opposition parties have questioned the accuracy of those figures. www.canada.com/price+could+billion/4420670/story.htmlCanada F-35 cost estimate soars 66%: report - 10/03/11 Those numbers add up to a total ownership cost of $450 million per aircraft, or $29.3 billion overall, according to the PBO report. www.flightglobal.com/articles/2011/03/10/354228/canada-f-35-cost-estimate-soars-66-report.html Another thread: DND computers used to delete criticism - Canada www.pyrelog.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=politics&action=display&thread=230&page=1Canada’s F-35s: Engines not included Government will be required to provide powerplant for stealth fighters, documents show The Ottawa Citizen April 17, 2011 The multi-million dollar F-35 stealth fighter that the Conservatives want to purchase comes with all the accoutrements of a high-tech aircraft — everything, that is, except an engine. www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Canada+Engines+included/4629251/story.htmlThat image in my head of Peter MacKay's photo op with Rona Ambrose as the chick in the background at the military hardware show just seems all the more stupid now.

Like, are there or aren't there engines included in these *untendered* over-budget very numerous aircraft. Monday, April 18, 2011 Canada’s F-35 jets: Engines not included The records, obtained through the Access to Information law by peace activist Tamara Lorincz, are from a series of meetings last fall when defence bureaucrats and military officers toured the country to promote the F-35 deal. “Engines are provided as gov’t furnished equipment,” noted the documents. The term “government furnished equipment” signifies that the engines are being provided separately by Canada. It is unclear how much extra the engines will cost or whether there would be additional costs for installing the power plants into the fighters. In an e-mail late Friday, DND stated that Canada is purchasing the least costly variant of the F-35. chaffandflare.blogspot.com/2011/04/canadas-f-35-jets-engines-not-included.html

Harper aide denies receiving kickbacks in Montreal port job Published On Thu Apr 21 2011 The appearance of political links to Accurso has become toxic in the province ever since reports first emerged of the streams of politicians and union officials who have been invited onto the businessman’s personal yacht and his great success securing lucrative government contracts. Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Communications Director Dimitri Soudas answers questions at a campaign event in St. John's, NL on Thursday April 21, 2011. Soudas is denying that he received kickbacks for allegedly trying to influence the appointment process at the Montreal Port Authority. www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/978404--harper-aide-denies-receiving-kickbacks-in-montreal-port-job?bn=1
