Ötzi the ice mummy's secrets found in DNA 16:00 28 February 2012 Ötzi the ice mummy may have met his death in the Alps some 5300 years ago, but his descendants live on – on the Mediterranean islands of Corsica and Sardinia. The finding comes from an analysis of Ötzi's DNA, which also reveals he had brown eyes and hair, and was lactose intolerant. The ice mummy was found in 1991 on an Alpine glacier between Austria and Italy, where he met a violent end in the Neolithic. Albert Zink of the Institute for Mummies and the Iceman in Bolzano, Italy, and colleagues have now analysed DNA extracted from Ötzi's pelvis to find out more about his life. Mutations to the iceman's MCM6 gene suggest he could not digest the lactose sugar in milk – unlike most modern Europeans. "Maybe at that time most people were still lactose-intolerant," says Zink. "The change to farming livestock [in Europe] only began between about 5000 and 10,000 years ago and so digesting milk became an advantage." Ötzi was more likely than most to develop heart disease. He carried one genetic mutation that in modern humans raises the risk of coronary heart disease by 40 per cent, and two others that made him prone to a build-up of fat in the linings of his arteries. www.newscientist.com/article/dn21523-otzi-the-ice-mummys-secrets-found-in-dna.htmlPublished: March 5, 2012 - By History.com Staff Iceman Frozen for Millennia Had Lyme Disease, Clogged Arteries & Sardinian Relatives www.history.com/news/2012/03/05/iceman-frozen-for-millennia-had-lyme-disease-blocked-arteries-sardinian-relatives/

Scientists stumped by prehistoric human whose face doesn't fit March 15, 2012 THEY have been dubbed the Red Deer Cave people and they are a big mystery. Fossils of this previously unknown group of prehistoric humans, who lived as recently as 11,500 years ago, have been discovered in south-west China by a team including Melbourne researchers. Their highly unusual mix of archaic and modern features raises the possibility they represent a new species of human. www.theage.com.au/national/scientists-stumped-by-prehistoric-human-whose-face-doesnt-fit-20120314-1v3m0.html

Human ancestors were using fire a million years ago - 300,000 years earlier than previously thought Ash found among bones and burned plants in South African cave Key moment in human evolution Hints that ancestors as early as homo erectus might have used fire PUBLISHED: 20:12 GMT, 2 April 2012 | UPDATED: 20:12 GMT, 2 April 2012 One of the turning points in human evolution occurred 300,000 years earlier than previously believed. Traces of ash mixed with million-year-old bones and tools have been uncovered in the Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa. Burned plants and bones were found in the cave, suggesting that its inhabitants cooked and perhaps even socialised around camp fires. Burtele Foot Indicates Lucy Not Alone Published: April 3, 2012. National Science Foundation A new fossil discovery from Eastern Africa called the Burtele foot indicates Australopithecus afarensis, an early relative of modern humans, may not have been the only hominin to walk the plains and woodlands of what is now the Afar region of Ethiopia some 3.4 million years ago. Researchers openly have questioned whether Au. afarensis, the species to which the famous fossil "Lucy" belongs, was the only living hominin during the late Pliocene of Africa. Lucy's bones provided evidence that she and perhaps other early hominins may have walked upright, but whether or not she was the sole hominin species in her particular geologic time scale has been the subject of much debate. "There was indeed more than one early hominin species during that time," said Yohannes Haile-Selassie, head of Physical Anthropology at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and lead author of the findings. more: www.sciencenewsline.com/biology/2012040318030033.html

15,000 years older than thought 'Spanish cave paintings may been the work of Neanderthals' Friday, June 15, 2012, 12:51 New Delhi: Crude paintings found in a Spanish cave have been found to be the oldest in the world, so ancient that some scientists say they may not have been made by modern man but by the Neanderthals. Scientists testing the coating of paintings in 11 Spanish caves, found that one is at least 40,800 years old, which is at least 15,000 years older than previously thought. That makes them older than the more famous French cave paintings by thousands of years. Scientists dated the Spanish cave paintings by measuring the decay of uranium atoms, instead of traditional carbon-dating, according to a report by the journal Science. The paintings were first discovered in the 1870s. [...] Cave paintings are "one of the most exquisite examples of human symbolic behavior," said study co-author Joao Zilhao, an anthropologist at the University of Barcelona. "And that, that's what makes us human." article.wn.com/view/2012/06/15/Spanish_cave_paintings_may_be_the_work_of_Neanderthals/________________________________________ World’s Oldest Movies Discovered In French Caves Posted by Felicia Hawke On Jun 14, 2012 11:44am Perhaps movies is a term to complex to describe the discovery made by archaeologist Marc Azéma and artist Florent Rivère in the French cave of Lascaux. It’s better to refer as the paintings on the wall as the world’s oldest animations or moving picture shows. The research has been published in the June edition of “Antiquity”. Marc Azéma spent over twenty years studying Stone Age artists and their techniques. However the animation techniques Stone Age artists used prevail in his research, and for quite a good reason. According to Azéma, 12 French caves featuring 53 figures show that Stone Age artists wanted to “give life to their images”. “The majority of cave drawings show animals in action” explained Marc Azéma. “That such animation was intentional is endorsed by the likely use of incised disks as thaumatropes” added the researcher. Thaumatropes were first discovered some 200 years ago by astronomer John Hershel. They are also called a miracle wheel and work by spinning a few images on a disk, thus making the viewer get the illusion of movement. Marc Azéma and Florent Rivère refer to Paleolithic thaumatropes “as the earliest of the attempts to represent movement that culminated in the invention of the cinematic camera”. But, how did the Stone Age artists create the illusion of movement without specialized technology? Azéma explains that the paintings discovered in the French caves features animals in different states of motion. For instance, “Lascaux is the cave with the greatest number of cases of split-action movement by superimposition of successive images. Some 20 animals, principally horses, have the head, legs or tail multiplied”. Basically Stone Age artists were using torches to bring light to their paintings and create the illusion of movement. Moreover, Azéma believes a bone disc found 200 years ago is proof that Stone Age artists discovered the magic wheel way earlier than John Hershel. www.dailygossip.org/world-s-oldest-movies-discovered-in-french-caves-3652

Discovery in Monmouth could be 'Stone Age house' 10:10am Thursday 14th June 2012 Remnants of a structure were found, which archaeologists and historians believe could be unique to Britain, dating back to at least the Bronze Age, although it could be even older than Egypt’s ancient Pyramids. Experts suggest the structure’s size, and it having been made from entire trees, means the building could be a “long house” – with the possibility of dating as far back as the New Stone Age (the Neolithic Age) and could predate the Pyramids from 3,000- 2,000 BC. The building was discovered at the edge of an ancient lake, which dried up thousands of years ago. www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/gwentnews/9761029.Discovery_in_Monmouth_could_be__Stone_Age_house_/

Interesting. "Unlocking the Secrets of Plato’s Lost Continent"Atlantis, The Lost Continent Finally Found, released on August 2005, is Prof. Arysio Santos' latest work. Following the same line of thought that made his homonymous website become the most popular in its category, having received more than 2.5 million visits within the past few years, he explains in this book his Theory on Atlantis, using an infinitude of arguments, which range from the strictly scientific (such as Geology, Linguistics, and Anthropology) to the more arcane and occult ones. A professional scientist with a PhD in Nuclear Physics and Free-Docency in Physical-Chemistry, the author has dedicated himself intensely to the study of the Atlantis problem, for about 30 years now. Being the first one to ever link the catastrophic events of the end of the last Ice Age (11.600 years ago) with the world-wide traditions of the universal Flood and the destruction of Atlantis, Prof. Santos managed to find a perfect site for the location of the Lost Continent. Such site strives unrivaled as being the most logical one ever proposed, matching all the features mentioned by the Greek philosopher Plato, as well as those cited by other sources. Atlantis was never found because we have all been looking in the wrong places. Realizing that, we started to look for the spot where an entire sunken continent could be hiding itself. Geology afforded the correct, irrefutable answer: down under the South China Sea, that is where. The rest followed quite naturally and, in fact, far more serendipitously than we ourselves could ever have imagined beforehand. For the tantalizing details, just keep reading, and you will see that we have also found, as a surplus, the Garden of Eden, the Island of Avalon, the Garden of the Hesperides, the hideout of the New Jerusalem, the true location of Troy and of Lanka, as well as the Holy Land and Paradise that has been promised us all from the dawn of time. www.atlan.org/

LOREENA MCKENNITT ALL SOULS NIGHT LIVE www.youtube.com/watch?v=srBOVO0ug4IMcKennitt made a discovery in 1991 that would again affect her musical direction. She attended an exhibition of international Celtic artifacts in Venice, Italy. Up to this point, she thought that Celts only came from Ireland, Scotland, and Britain. As she walked through the exhibition, she found Celtic art from placeslike Hungary, Ukraine, Spain, and Asia Minor. “It was like a huge door had opened up for me creatively and as a source of inspiration,” McKennitt told Kirsten A. Conover in the Christian Science Monitor. “So I’ve used that pan-Celtic history as a creative springboard.” www.encyclopedia.com/topic/Loreena_McKennitt.aspx

Cave Find May Add 2,000 Years to Pottery Timeline Jul. 13, 2012 Pottery pieces recently unearthed from a cave in China have pushed back the time when humans began developing the tools for food production, according to a recent study in the journal Science. The archaeologists who found the fragments say the pieces are from 19,000-20,000 years old, or about 2,000 years older than the oldest known pottery remains. (Those remains--from Yuchanyan Cave in Hunan, China--were estimated to be about 18,000 years old.) sciencefriday.com/blogs/07/13/2012/cave-find-may-add-2-000-years-to-pottery-timeline.html

Neanderthal-type species once roamed Africa, DNA shows Published: July 26 “Geneticists like euphemisms, but we’re talking about sex,” said Joshua Akey of the University of Washington in Seattle, whose lab identified the mystery DNA in three groups of modern Africans. These genetic leftovers do not resemble DNA from any modern-day humans. The foreign DNA also does not resemble Neanderthal DNA, which shows up in the DNA of some modern-day Europeans, Akey said. That means the newly identified DNA came from an unknown group. www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/early-africans-mated-with-mystery-species-of-humans/2012/07/26/gJQAxFzZBX_story.html

Humans and Neanderthals shared ancestor, not beds Wednesday, 15 August 2012 Anthropologists have dealt a blow to theories that humans and Neanderthals interbred, according to a new study. Over the last two years, several studies have suggested that Homo sapiens got it on with Neanderthals, an hominid who lived in parts of Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East for up to 300,000 years but vanished more than 30,000 years ago. The evidence for this comes from fossil DNA, which shows that on average Eurasians and Asians share between one and four per cent of their DNA with Neanderthals, but Africans almost none. But a new study by scientists at Britain's University of Cambridge suggests the shared DNA came from a shared ancestor, not from "hybridisation" or reproduction between the two hominid species. Cave of the Monkeys in Tam Pa Ling: Oldest Bones from Modern Humans in Asia Discovered Date: 20 August 2012 Time: 03:01 PM ET The shape of the bone and teeth is distinctly anatomically modern human, not like those of an extinct lineage such as the Neanderthals. A variety of dating techniques of the sediments surrounding the fossils suggests they are at least 46,000 to 51,000 years old, and direct dating of the bone suggests a maximum age of about 63,000 years. This makes these fossils the earliest skeletal evidence for anatomically modern humans east of the Middle East. www.livescience.com/22529-oldest-bones-modern-humans-asia.htmlHolocene end of the Pleistocene (around 12,000 14 C years ago) to present Pleistocene 2.58-1.80 million to 11,550 years ago
