China National Offshore Oil Co. (govt-owned CNOOC) __________________________ U.S. senator wants to halt assess Chinese takeover of Nexen The Canadian Press July 30, 2012 Although Nexen is based in Canada, it has offshore holdings in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and CNOOC said the deal requires approval from regulators in the U.S. Schumer says he expects that means the deal will need the blessing of CFIUS to go ahead. ... Meanwhile on Friday, the Securities and Exchange Commission said it got a court order to freeze assets of Hong Kong traders who bought stock in Nexen before CNOOC announced its plans. The SEC said Well Advantage Ltd. and other traders allegedly bought shares in Nexen based on inside information. China's CNOOC announced plans to buy Nexen on Monday for $15.1 billion. The SEC said it moved to freeze the assets shortly after Well Advantage tried to sell all of its Nexen stock. The friendly deal between Nexen and China National Offshore Oil Co. announced Monday needs approval from Investment Canada and the Competition Bureau to go ahead. www.ottawacitizen.com/business/energy-resources/senator+wants+halt+Chinese+takeover+Nexen/7010485/story.html__________________________ Leaked China Documents Show Massive Corruption, Officials Fleeing Country - Last Updated: July 25, 2012 The data received by The Epoch Times indicated that over 7,101 corrupt officials have fled to the United States, together bringing over 336 billion yuan (US$52.7 billion). www.theepochtimes.com/n2/china-news/leaked-china-documents-show-massive-corruption-268395.html__________________________ Taxpayer-funded Bruce Carson school spent $1.3 million on salaries, travel, office in 2011 - July 31, 2012 Bruce Carson, a former adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, headed the Alberta-based Canada School of Energy and Environment that promoted research collaborations between three universities in the province until he was prompted to leave because of unrelated allegations of inappropriate lobbying of the government on behalf of a company promoting water treatment technology and services. www.montrealgazette.com/business/Taxpayer+funded+Bruce+Carson+school+spent+million/7019569/story.html__________________________ Bruce Carson charged Friday, July 27, 2012 12:09pm The RCMP has charged the former PMO advisor with influence peddling. www2.macleans.ca/2012/07/27/bruce-carson-charged/

No Tar Sands Pipeline in VT Say Protesters, Despite FBI Visits 07/28/2012 Another reason not to proceed would be that Enbridge, Inc., owner of a pipeline from the central Canadian tar sands to Montreal, has recently suspended development of that pipeline for hotter, more corrosive tar sands oil. But the company continues to seek the permits to make its so-called “Trailbreaker Project” possible under better economic conditions. The Portland Montreal Pipe Line runs along side this lake. Sebago Lake is the largest source of fresh drinking water in southern Maine! Pipeline protestors were only one of many groups that will gather in Burlington, Vermont this weekend to make their voices heard at the 36th annual Conference of New England Governors, which includes six American governors, five Canadian premiers, and an ambassador from each country, a group that traditionally conducts public business in private, but holds a press conference afterwards. ivn.us/2012/07/28/no-tar-sands-pipeline-in-vt-say-protesters-despite-fbi-visits/

U.S. senator [R-ND] visited this week: "It's nice." mergersandacquisitionreviewcom.blogspot.ca/2011/02/after-encanas-jv-for-shale-gas-now.htmldecember 12, 2011
That's when he left to head up a newly created Alberta-based think-tank, the Canada School of Energy and Environment, supposedly to help develop new sources of green energy.
Located at the University of Calgary, the school was funded with a special $15-million grant from the Harper government.
Only weeks after his appointment was announced, Carson was seconded back into Harper's service as a senior adviser during the 2008 federal election campaign, and for several months after that, he was back working in the PM's office.
During that time, he appeared to have lobbied high-ranking bureaucrats to help him obtain a $25-million federal grant to establish another new research institute — Carbon Management Canada — which he would also go on to head. German Village Achieves Energy Independence… And Then Some BioCycle August 2011, Vol. 52, No. 8, p. 37 Wildpoldsried produces 321 percent more energy than it needs and is generating $5.7 million in annual revenue – a remarkable accomplishment for a modest farming community that has been able to invest in new municipal infrastructure without going into debt. *******In May 2011, 14 years later, Mayor Arno Zengerle announced at a town hall meeting that it’s “half time” of his third term. He walked the community through a massive list of accomplishments that include nine new community buildings (including the school, gym and community hall) complete with solar panels, four biogas digesters with a fifth in construction, seven windmills with two more on the way, 190 private households equipped with solar, a district heating network with 42 connections, three small hydro power plants, ecological flood control and a natural wastewater system. www.biocycle.net/2011/08/german-village-achieves-energy-independence-and-then-some/

It is radical and revolutionary to notice islands, or 800 spills for that matter. Tell Enbridge to pull its misleading ads... So it hired the same PR firm that worked for Big Tobacco and Enron to roll out a multi-million dollar public image makeover. Its slick website campaign is designed to convince the public that the oil tanker route is safe, but a scientist just discovered that Enbridge deliberately removed 1,000 km2 of islands off of a public video and map to make the oil tanker route look much less treacherous than it actually is. [3] The slick route animation and map in the route safety video both show the Douglas Channel without the maze of islands that oil tankers as long as the Eiffel Tower will have to weave through. Enbridge knows that spill cleanup would use skimmers and booms that work only in low breezes and a light chop — not in treacherous waters with names like Terror Point, Calamity Bay and Grief Point. sumofus.org/campaigns/enbridge/?sub=leadnow0812Very calm water - Northern Gateway opportunity - Northern Gateway tanker safety video www.northerngateway.ca/economic-opportunity/northern-gateway-tanker-safety-video/

"That video is meant to be for illustrative purposes only. It's not meant to be to scale. It's meant to illustrate the pipeline route, not the marine aspects of the operation," Enbridge spokesman Todd Nogier said yesterday in The Victoria Times Colonist. Identifying over 1.2 million hectares of new protected conservation areas that will remain free of industrial activity is progress that should be applauded. Through the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan, Premier Redford and Minister McQueen have made progress on Alberta’s commitment to responsible oilsands development. “While a promising start, today’s announcement is just the beginning of the environmental improvements required to ensure responsible oilsands development. SevenBlockadersArrestedinLivingstonLockdown Thu, 08/30/2012 - 13:33 The action comes in response to a recent court ruling giving TransCanada the green light to steal a piece of Texas landowner Julia Trigg Crawford's home. Lamar County Judge Bill Harris practically insulted this local farmer by sending a 15-word summary judgment to her from his iPhone in Washington, DC, August 15. It was this mistreatment of landowners, among other reasons, that motivated Houston businessman Ray Torgerson to lockdown. "The fact that this corporation can check a box on a form and steal someone's land is insulting," Ray said. "We are here to defend our homes and stand with landowners like Julia." www.occupy.com/article/seven-blockaders-arrested-livingston-lockdown

Published on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 by Common Dreams Tar Sands Pipeline Whistleblower Challenges Claims of Safety Former TransCananda employee Evan Vokes voiced concern over pipeline safety, inspection procedures New revelations from a former employee of tar sands company TransCanda cast further doubt on the public and environmental safety of the company's crude-carrying pipelines. The whistleblower, Evan Vokes, tells CBC News that TransCanada management including the CEO refused to act on his concerns of pipeline safety. "I wrote a series of emails to a series of project managers saying, 'We can't do this practice, we can’t do this practice, we can’t do this practice,'" Vokes told CBC News. "And I received increasingly pressured emails about how things were OK to do it that way." After receiving no response, Vokes, a metallurgical engineer, filed a complaint with the federal energy industry regulator, the National Energy Board (NEB), on May 1 and was fired a week later. www.commondreams.org/headline/2012/10/17-12

Federal scientists uncover evidence that oilsands contaminants travel further than expected www.vancouversun.com/news/national/Federal+scientists+uncover+evidence+that+oilsands/7542747/story.htmlThe chemical “legacy” in the lake sediments indicates that oilsands pollution is travelling further than expected and has been for decades. “The footprint of the deposition is potentially larger than we might have anticipated,” says Derek Muir, a senior Environment Canada scientist, who will present the findings Wednesday at an international toxicology conference longbeach.setac.org/ in the U.S. where the oilsands are a hot topic. “priority pollutants” including a neurotoxin that “bioaccumulates” in food webs
