Michaelle Jean says au revoir, not adieu, as she prepares to leave Rideau Hall Tue, 28/09/2010 - 2:31pm "Dear friends, for the past five years parliamentary life in this country has been rather eventful, to say the least," Jean said. "I have read no less than five speeches from the throne since 2005. Some would no doubt see this as evidence of Canada's democratic health ... and certainly of mine." ... Fewer than two dozen of Parliament's 308 MPs attended the event, with just three Conservative cabinet ministers, a single New Democrat and no Bloc Quebecois members in a crowd dominated by Liberals. Afterward, no one wanted to dwell on Jean's role in permitting Harper to prorogue Parliament. www.medicinehatnews.com/node/533867

The next guy - David Johnston will be sworn in as new Governor General on Oct. 1, 2010 That David Johnston scandal, in full July 12, 2010 4:31pm It’s true that it was Johnston, as adviser to the Prime Minister on the terms of reference for the Oliphant inquiry, who recommended against including the Airbus scandal in its mandate, a decision that looks all the more baffling in light of the judge’s findings: not only that Brian Mulroney took hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, shortly after leaving office, from the very man from whom he was accused of taking bribes while in office, but that he lied about it, up to and including his appearance before the inquiry. Regardless of whether Mulroney was personally involved, the circumstances surrounding the Airbus deal are so suspicious that, even 22 years later, they cry out for an inquiry — not in spite of the passage of time but because of it. Johnston’s reasoning, that Airbus, having once been the subject of an RCMP investigation, was “well-tilled ground,” is simply unsupported by the facts: the RCMP had only just begun their investigation when it was shut down by the leaking of the infamous “Swiss letter,” a calamity from which it never recovered. www2.macleans.ca/2010/07/12/that-david-johnston-scandal-in-full/

Tories' dirty little tricks Outraged opposition MPs called on the government yesterday to make public a secret guide book it distributed to Conservative committee chairmen which counsels them on how to cherrypick witnesses favourable to the Conservative Party and disrupt committees that want to study subjects that don't suit the government. Canada's Oath of Citizenship is equally retarded ... ridiculous. And get this - In feudal times a person would also swear allegiance to his feudal superiors. To this day the oath sworn by freemen of the City of London contains an oath of obedience to the Lord Mayor of the City of London.Oath of Citizenship "I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfill my duties as a Canadian citizen."In the 1990s there was a big uprising by the Monarchist League, who went bananas about: Sergio Marchi, then minister of Citizenship and Immigration, proposed a further step of creating a new "declaration" of citizenship, and commissioned ten Canadian writers to compose a pledge, with the explicit instruction to not refer to the monarch of Canada; the suggested declaration decided on was: I am a citizen of Canada, and I make this commitment: to uphold our laws and freedoms; to respect our people in their diversity; to work for our common well-being; and to safeguard and honour this ancient northern land.[/size][/b] Even minor little, reasonable oaths don't fare well: From this day forward, I pledge my loyalty and allegiance to Canada and Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada. I promise to respect our country's rights and freedoms, to defend our democratic values, to faithfully observe our laws and fulfill my duties and obligations as a Canadian citizen.Nope. Here we are with heirs - somewhere in a far away land It's just ridiculous. Who is the Monarchist League anyway. It's hinkydom.

What's your Kissinteger? What do Kevin Bacon, Paul Erds and Henry Kissinger have in common? Well, the first two people have already been identified in the popular imagination as being the best-connected node in the relationship graph of their respective field; the one with the shortest aggregate path (total number of hops) to all other nodes. In the case of Paul Erds, the prolific mathematician, this is most likely correct, when considering paper co-authorship (the degree of separation from him is called the Erds Number). When it comes to Kevin Bacon and his movie co-stars, the honor is probably more due to bored and fixated college students inventing a new game (Six degrees of Kevin Bacon). Now Foreign Policy magazine is making a good case that Henry Kissinger should be annointed "top node" for politics. Not sure what would qualify as a relationship in politics, but given that I have studied "under" Paul Wolfowitz at SAIS, I think my Kissinteger is 3. www.memefirst.com/2005/03/INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE ONE HONOUR MEMBER = Mr Henry KISSINGER www.olympic.org/en/content/The-IOC/Members/Mr-Henry-KISSINGER/

Channel 4 News CATCH UP Programme at 1900 weekdays, weekend timings see Lockerbie, BP, desert deals: who knows who? Thursday 22 July 2010 How does an ex spy link BP, Libya and Lockerbie bomber? Who Knows Who investigates the key players at the heart of a growing transatlantic rift - from deals in the desert to the boardroom, via MI6. Sir Nigel was again at Blair's side in 2007 when a prisoner transfer agreement was struck. On the same day Blair looked on as BP boss Tony Hayward signed a provisional agreement over $900m gas and oil exploration rights in Libya. Both deals later stalled and al-Megrahi's ill-health was the official reason for his release. www.channel4.com/news/lockerbie-bp-desert-deals-who-knows-who
