More on How Physicians Became Torture Doctors for CIA AUGUST 6, 2010 11:17AM The study, titled “Roles of CIA Physicians in Enhanced Interrogation and Torture of Detainees,” authored by Leonard S. Rubinstein, the president of Physicians for Human Rights, and Brigadier General (ret.) Stephen N. Xenakis, a former Army psychiatrists (who is now with the Center for Public Health and Human Rights), utilizes a previously secret document from 2004 and lays out the “guidelines for detainee interrogation” that physicians, psychologists, and other health care professionals developed and followed so they could serve the CIA. As an April 16, 2003, memo from Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld explained "... Those nations that believe that detainees are subject to POW protections may view use of this technique as inconsistent with the requirements of Geneva III, Article 13 which..."Yet, as demonstrated by a comprehensive report ("Establishing the New Normal" www.aclu.org/national-security/establishing-new-normal ) from the ACLU, the Obama Administration has avoided its obligation to accountability for torture and chosen to follow the dangerous mantra of “looking forward, not back,” a false choice because, as the ACLU states in the report: “a strong democracy rests not on the goodwill of its leaders but on the impartial enforcement of laws. Sanctioning impunity for government officials who authorized torture sends a problematic message to the world, invites abuses by future administrations, and further undermines the rule of law that is the basis of any democracy.”open.salon.com/blog/kevin_gosztola/2010/08/06/more_on_how_physicians_became_torture_doctors_for_cia

Regarding torture of detainees and children of detainees See also: Enhanced interrogation techniques After he left the Department of Justice, it was revealed that Yoo had authored memos, including co-authoring the Bybee memo defining torture and American habeas corpus obligations narrowly.[32][33][34] In addition, a new definition of torture was issued. Most actions that fall under the international definition do not fall within this new definition advocated by the U.S.[35] Several top military lawyers, including Alberto J. Mora, reported that policies allowing methods equivalent to torture were officially handed down from the highest levels of the administration, and led an effort within the Department of Defense to put a stop to those policies and instead mandate non-coercive interrogation standards. [36][37] On December 1, 2005, Yoo appeared in a debate in Chicago with University of Notre Dame law professor Doug Cassel. During the debate Cassel asked Yoo, "If the President deems that he's got to torture somebody, including by crushing the testicles of the person's child, there is no law that can stop him?", to which Yoo replied "No treaty." Cassel followed up with "Also no law by Congress — that is what you wrote in the August 2002 memo...", to which Yoo replied "I think it depends on why the President thinks he needs to do that." [38][39] On June 26, 2008, Yoo and Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff and former counsel David Addington testified before the House Judiciary Committee in a contentious hearing on detainee treatment, interrogation methods and the extent of executive branch authority.[17][40][41][42] In this hearing, Rep. John Conyers repeatedly asked Yoo to clarify his remarks on the presidential power to authorize torture:[43] Chairman Conyers: I didn't ask you if you ever gave him advice, I asked you do you think the President could order a suspect buried alive? Yoo: Mr. Chairman, my view right now, is I don't think a president would - no American president would ever have to order that or feel it necessary to order that. Chairman Conyers: I think we understand the games that are being played... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Yoo#Legal_opinions

WikiLeaks reveals US blunders at Guantanamo Mon Apr 25, 5:57 pm ET WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States has botched the handling of inmates at Guantanamo, holding men for years without reliable evidence while releasing others who posed a grave threat, according to leaked secret documents. The trove of classified files released by the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks showed US officials struggling with often flawed evidence and confused about the guilt or innocence of detainees held at the prison at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Hundreds of inmates who turned out to have no serious terror links were held without trial, based on vague or inaccurate information, including accounts from unreliable fellow detainees or statements from men who had been abused or tortured, the New York Times quoted the documents as saying. One impoverished Afghan farmer with no ties to militants was held for two years without trial in a case of mistaken identity, the documents showed. news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20110425/ts_alt_afp/usattacksguantanamowikileaks

How US firms profited from torture flightsThursday, Sep 1, 2011 whatreallyhappened.com/node/132671'$5,000 an hour to fly a terrorist': Sky-high fees paid by CIA to move around suspects exposed - Last updated at 4:10 PM on 1st September 2011. FBI files indict Bush, Cheney and Co. as war criminals 23 May 2008 The most stunning revelation in a 370-page Justice US Department Inspector General’s report released this week was that agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation had formally opened a “War Crimes” file, documenting torture they had witnessed at the Guantánamo Bay US prison camp, before being ordered by the administration to stop writing their reports. The World Socialist Web Site, together with human rights groups and other opponents of US militarism and repression, has long insisted that the actions of the Bush administration—the launching of wars of aggression, assassinations, the abduction and detention of civilians without trial and, most repugnant of all, torture—constitute war crimes under any legitimate interpretation of longstanding international statutes and treaties. www.wsws.org/articles/2008/may2008/fbi-m23.shtml

Music used as 'disincentive' at Guantanamo Bay, Pentagon says Updated: 5/31/12 5:13 PM EDT On Tuesday, Al Jazeera released the documentary “Songs of War,” which examines the use of music as a form of torture. According to the documentary, prisoners at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba have been forced to wear headphones and listen to music for prolonged periods. Composer Christopher Cerf, who writes music for “Sesame Street” and is featured in the documentary, expressed outrage that his songs were used as an interrogation tool. www.politico.com/news/stories/0512/76924.htmlSongs of War www.aljazeera.com/programmes/aljazeeraworld/2012/05/201253072152430549.html

Another Guantánamo prisoner death highlights Democrats' hypocrisy With closing Guantánamo given up as a lost cause, Obama's policy has moved onto assassination rather than detention Tuesday 11 September 2012 15.22 BST A detainee at Guantánamo was found dead in his cell on Saturday, according to camp officials. He is the ninth person to die at the camp since it was opened more than ten years ago. As former Gitmo guard Brandon Neely pointed out Monday, more detainees have died at the camp (nine) than have been convicted of wrongdoing by its military commissions (six). This is the fourth detainee who has died at the camp since Obama's inauguration. Although the detainee's identity has not been disclosed, a camp spokesman acknowledged that he "had not been charged and had not been designated for prosecution". In other words, he has been kept by the US government in a cage for many years without any opportunity to contest the accusations against him, and had no hope of leaving the camp except by death. www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/sep/11/guantanamo-prisoner-death-democrats
