St. Francis Xavier professor Alvaro Montenegro says no one knows what the oil will do, but it's unlikely it will reach Nova Scotia. "These currents move away from shore and around North Carolina into the interior of the Atlantic to the east," he said. "Direct impact or oil directly reaching the shores of Nova Scotia is an unlikely probability." www.news1130.com/news/national/article/62954--bp-oil-spill-not-likely-to-spread-to-eastern-canadaJun 05, 2010 11:50:02 AM Mark Butler with the Ecology Action Centre says the oil could affect generations of migratory fish like the bluefin tuna. Meanwhile, seafood groups are concerned what the spill will mean for consumer confidence.

Gulf Oil Spill "Could Go on Years and Years" ... by F. William Engdahl ...When the Army Corps of Engineers first attempted to obtain NASA imagery of the Gulf oil slick, which is larger than is being reported by the media, it was reportedly denied the access. By chance, National Geographic managed to obtain satellite imagery shots of the extent of the disaster and posted them on their web site. Other satellite imagery reportedly being withheld by the Obama administration, shows that what lies under the gaping chasm spewing oil at an ever-alarming rate is a cavern estimated to be the size of Mount Everest. This information has been given an almost national security-level classification to keep it from the public, according to Madsen’s sources. The Corps of Engineers and FEMA are reported to be highly critical of the lack of support for quick action after the oil disaster by the Obama White House and the US Coast Guard. Only now has the Coast Guard understood the magnitude of the disaster, dispatching nearly 70 vessels to the affected area. Under the loose regulatory measures implemented by the Bush-Cheney Administration, the US Interior Department’s Minerals Management Service became a simple “rubber stamp,” approving whatever the oil companies wanted in terms of safety precautions that could have averted such a disaster. Madsen describes a state of “criminal collusion” between Cheney’s former firm, Halliburton, and the Interior Department’s MMS, and that the potential for similar disasters exists with the other 30,000 off-shore rigs that use the same shut-off valves. [9]... Without doubt at this point we are in the midst of what could be the greatest ecological catastrophe in history. The oil platform explosion took place almost within the current loop where the Gulf Stream originates. This has huge ecological and climatological consequences. A cursory look at a map of the Gulf Stream shows that the oil is not just going to cover the beaches in the Gulf, it will spread to the Atlantic coasts up through North Carolina then on to the North Sea and Iceland. And beyond the damage to the beaches, sea life and water supplies, the Gulf stream has a very distinct chemistry, composition (marine organisms), density, temperature. What happens if the oil and the dispersants and all the toxic compounds they create actually change the nature of the Gulf Stream? No one can rule out potential changes including changes in the path of the Gulf Stream, and even small changes could have huge impacts. Europe, including England, is not an icy wasteland due to the warming from the Gulf Stream. www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=19660

US student's message in bottle found in Ireland Mon Oct 4, 12:26 PM By The Associated Press MELBOURNE, Fla. - A message in a bottle sent by a Florida high school student as part of his marine science class has come ashore in Ireland. Corey Swearingen put the bottle into the Atlantic Ocean in April 2009 and it followed the current all the way to the small fishing village of Kilbaha, Ireland, in County Clare, on the western coast. A 17-year-old boy and his father found the bottle during a family holiday there. Stephen Flannery of Athelone, Ireland, and his son, Adam, responded via email to the letter, which had urged the reader to write with details of the bottle's location. ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/101004/science/science_us_odd_message_in_bottle___________________________ Not exactly the buoy next door. Climate mythology: The Gulf Stream, European climate and Abrupt Change Richard Seager Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University A few times a year the British media of all stripes goes into a tizzy of panic when one climate scientist or another states that there is a possibility that the North Atlantic ocean circulation, of which the Gulf Stream is a major part, will slow down in coming years or even stop. Whether the scientists statements are measured or inflammatory the media invariably warns that this will plunge Britain and Europe into a new ice age, pictures of the icy shores of Labrador are shown, created film of English Channel ferries making their way through sea ice are broadcast... And so the circus continues year after year. Here is one example. The Gulf Stream-European climate mythThe panic is based on a long held belief of the British, other Europeans, Americans and, indeed, much of the world's population that the northward heat transport by the Gulf Stream is the reason why western Europe enjoys a mild climate, much milder than, say, that of eastern North America. This idea was actually originated by an American military man, Matthew Fontaine Maury, in the mid nineteenth century and has stuck since despite the absence of proof. We now know this is a myth, the climatological equivalent of an urban legend. In a detailed study www.ldeo.columbia.edu/res/div/ocp/gs/pubs/Seager_etal_QJ_2002.pdf (24pp) published in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society in 2002, we demonstrated the limited role that ocean heat transport plays in determining regional climates around the Atlantic Ocean. Popular versions of this story can be found - www.ldeo.columbia.edu/res/div/ocp/gs/pubs/Seager_AmSci_2006.pdf (9pp) www.ldeo.columbia.edu/res/div/ocp/pub/seager/PlantsmanSeager2008.pdf (7pp) in French www.ldeo.columbia.edu/res/div/ocp/pub/seager/Seager_recherche2003.pdf (6pp). Is something fishy going on? Last updated at 15:23, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 A FISHY mystery has got Furness beach-goers puzzled. Hundreds of dead crabs and starfish have washed up on a Walney beach. The bizarre sight follows a number of other similar incidents in the UK and beyond. Walker Mike Quinn, of Piel View Grove, Barrow, made the discovery while strolling along a beach in South Walney on Monday. www.nwemail.co.uk/news/barrow/is-something-fishy-going-on

Record heat wave hits Alaska -- June 25, 2013, 3:00 PM Baked Alaska is taking on a new meaning this week. Temperatures in Anchorage, the country's northernmost city with a population of more than 250,000, reached the 80s and are expected to remain high through the weekend. www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162-57590963/record-heat-wave-hits-alaska/*********** Alberta floods: ‘Firehose of moisture’ caused floods in Calgary June 22, 2013 EDMONTON - A massive high pressure system held in place by a loop in the jet stream is what’s behind both the Calgary floods and balmy temperatures in the Yukon. “It doesn’t let systems through,” said Chris Scott, chief meteorologist at the Weather Network. He watched as what would otherwise be just a simple spring storm got stuck west of Calgary. The weather system came over the mountains from the Pacific. As it spun and stalled over the foothills, it pulled in moisture from Saskatchewan, the United States and the Gulf of Mexico. Starting Wednesday around suppertime, it poured for 15 to 18 hours straight across most of southwest Alberta. www.edmontonjournal.com/technology/Firehose+moisture+caused+floods+Calgary/8561123/story.html *********** The Gulf Stream Stalled, Sea Level Rose & the East Coast Flooded in November 2012 February 18, 2013 National The Gulf Stream has been weakening continuously since 2004, accelerating sea level rise on the U.S. east coast, with the highest impact on sea level rise centered around Cape Hatteras according to a report, accepted for publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research. The International team of oceanographers led by Princeton & Old Dominion University professor Tal Ezer has 99.99% statistical confidence that the correlation between the Gulf Stream weakening and sea level rise is real. fisherynation.com/archives/4546
